One of the most used defense mechanisms of the human mind in a situation that is that stressful and emotional is attempts (usually failed) at humor. The attempt to lighten the mood and make it easier to deal with. Unfortunately I've been on the scene at a few car accidents prior to organized rescue personel and you would be amazed at the idiotic comments made, seemingly WAY out of place, just to make the commentor more at east and able to deal with whats just happened, or is still happening.

I was travelling through tennesee with my folks years back, and on the highway in a rain storm, a horse trailer loaded with 6 show horses lost control (was doing about 80 in heavy rain, jack ass behind the wheel...). The ford AND fifth wheel horse trailer went OVER a nissan 240, knocked a saturn sedan 2 lanes to the right, and stopped half way through a minivan. The older couple in the minivan (thankfully just dropped off their grand kids) had the bumper of the horse guy's truck, touching the back of their head rests where their roof used to be. While talking to the guys trapped in the 240, which was now lower to the ground than a Countach and a twist of steel and glass with 2 of the luckiest guys ever inside of it... they just kept making jokes about how much the state sucked, and how they wanted a convertible anyway so, "that was cheaper than buying one"... They went on and on for about 15 minutes before the first ambulance could get through the traffic and up to the scene

I didn't even know there was a manga. According to J.J., this was his own little creation of the American Godzilla.
That's fine to assume, but just from what the movie showed us, it appeared Lily was the only one we know survived at the very least. Everyone who died during the movie was filmed during their death. Lily wasn't. That's why I asked, was Lily the only surviver of the movie. Not, did she survive the whole attack off-camera. ;)
And there may even be a possibility Rob & Beth survived, but it seems highly unlikely, imo.

I just hope it's not on the same day. I don't need to pay to see to the same experience, with just different folks because I'd have a strong feeling whoever it is the next time, would do the same as Rob's Group. See the monster, run away, encounter the little buggers, run away, all with multiple people dieing. If anything, I'd rather see the attack from an international point of view.

This film is getting panned by the New York media.

I am typing this from my Blackberry while at my mailbox waiting for my $10.00 refund check.

Any of you fellows seen the 2 new pictures 1-18-08.com?

Looks like we'll continue to see viral marketing long after this movie has been in theaters.

 If you are then you should turn in your fan-card because this is as close to LOST as a movie gets. From the little hints that if you get on the internet you'll find lots of info on what's going on. Like the fact that Hawk (Jason) is wearing a Slusho t-shirt that his brother (Rob) gave him. Why? Well Rob is going to work in Japan. As Slusho isn't in the U.S. yet and Rob got a big marketing job you'd have to assume he's going to work for Slusho. "You can't drink just 6!" And who owns Slusho? Well, Tagruato, the same corporation that had one of it's off shore deep sea drilling platforms destroyed just days before the attack on the city. See the news video here. Yes there is a Slusho web site and yes there is a Tagruato web site that gives information on what might be going on. There were also some viral web videos that were sent out and titled "Jamie and Teddy #1-10" that give more info. You can see them here along with and interview of J.J. Abrams and the actors. One clue as to where "cloverfield" came from, well Slusho is made from "deep sea nectar." So it appears that Tagruato who’s drilling for deep sea oil and other is Yosida Medical Research. YMR is a genetic research firm specializing in deep sea bioprospecting. They were digging around in a deep sea trench and they dug it up or just pissed it off. Also remember what kind of ship was capsized in the harbor? Oil tanker. Wana guess who owned it? I’d guess it was what caused the explosion at the beginning of the movie. So, Rob was going to work for the company that ultimately caused the monster to come to New York, which ended in his own death. Ironic? Thanks J.J.!

All of that was found with about an hour and a half of surfing the net. If you want a more concise rundown go here: http://cloverfieldclues.blogspot.com/ (I didn’t find it till after I’d found ALL the other stuff. It would have saved me some time but may not have been as much fun.)

My point here is like lost this has many, many tie-ins that you have to go look for. The clues are there, you just have to be paying attention. I didn’t get most when I first saw the movie but, my girlfriend and I began to ask ourselves questions we turned to the internet to find answers. And Abrams, just like LOST, has provided lots of answers on the internet for those who are curious. Also the stories on LOST are told from multiple perspectives. Often you’ll get one hour of one characters perspective on a major even only to have another characters perspective of the SAME DAY. Right? Different perspectives of when they go into the hatch, different perspectives of when the plane crashed. Not only of the main characters but also from the “Others” perspective. I certainly think there might be a sequel. Maybe from the militaries perspective? A perspective that could be told with more traditional movie narrative techniques. Also there is apparently a Darma symbol in the beginning of the Cloverfield opening sequence.

Personally I liked the movie when I left the theater. Now that I’ve thought about it more the more I like it.

But one thing bothers me. It’s a time line thing. I’m not so concerned with how the monster moves but how the h*ll Beth moves! How could she get from down town to midtown, from when she leaves the party, drives up there, says good bye to her date, get up to her apartment and into her comfy cloths in the space of time before she gets injured and calls Rob? If I remember correctly in the film there’s no camera on-off from when she leaves to the “earthquake” to them going to the roof, the explosion, down the stairs, out to the street, the monster walks by, heading uptown, where were to believe Beth gets trapped. That phone call seems happen fairly quickly after the group gets back into the street. But then again it is a big monster and can cover a lot of ground fairly quickly and NY isn’t all that big. Multiple monsters maybe...?

^^I don't look for clues in a MOVIE. The damn thing wasn't even over 80 minutes long iirc. LOST, on the other hand, can make as many episodes as they want. I walked into the theater expecting a beginning, middle, and END. There hasn't been an end to LOST yet and I didn't expect one after the first episode or 10th (etc). A few days after the movie, I looked up more stuff and read up on that Slusho idea, but that never got my attention either.

There certainly was a beginning, middle and end. Sorry it didn't wrap it up in a nice little bow for you. I'm curious as to why you feel there wasn't? Also, knowing that it was produced by Abrams, you should know by now that there's always clues in his projects that'll lead you out into other media. It stands on it's own but if you'd like you can venture out and get more. That's the way all new entertainment is going.

Uh no, there wasn't an end. It's not the bridge collapse if that's what you're getting it. It's all the talk out of the theater about Slusho, falling satellites, or oil drilling, etc that can POSSIBLY lead to an ending. If he plans to release more films going on about this, I won't waste $10 again. I'll stick to watching more episodes of Lost with background info and development on characters as well as an interesting plot (a giant monster in NYC is neither original nor interesting).

The monster wasn't the story. The story began with people and it ended with people. It was your basic damsel in distress story but with a less than happy ending. As far as a monster in NYC not being original; neither is a bunch of people being stuck on a desert island after a shipwreck/plane crash.

Shipwreck =/= plane wreck. However, giant monster coming out of the water and attacking the SAME city making it to the big screen within about a 10 year period is almost the same (minus Puff Daddy soundtrack this time around).

Btw, if all those Slusho, oil drilling, etc, stuff is elaborated on in a sequel or something else, the story is NOT about a damsel in distress (who btw can travel very quickly in NYC to her apt for some reason). It's merely a boring beginning to something that hopefully will get better, but I doubt it. At least Lost had a nice intro. :)

You're just being difficult ;) You didnt dig the film...understood. But you're using some ridiculous arguments to make your point.

Bad movie or good movie its all about box office and Cloverfield has done well.

I saw the movie the first day it came out, and I loved it. Maybe because it had an approach no one had ever tried with the camera angles. I think the younger fellows like me would enjoy it, I heard the older ones had cases of motion sickness. I was in the 3rd row but had to move back after a few minutes of the movie, and thank God I did. What ever you do don't sit that close. After the movie you really had to think about how it all came together. To me this and "I Am Legend" where up there in my top movies this year.

well, my wfie and i saw the movie last night not knowing A THING about it.

About 20 minutes into the movie, i wanted to get up and leave.

a little after that it caught my attention and it started getting interesting

a little while later, we both just couldnt handle the camera angle. i got tired of the bouncing around and looking at peoples feet or half their head the whole time

if they would have softened that up a little or even had a traditional direction, the movie would have been pretty good

we both got up and walked out about 3/4 of the way thru i would guess...... along with 6 other people

    what a complete disappointment
