    I saw on top gear (i think) that the cls 500 has 7 forward geras and a 2-speed reverse. Can anyone confirm this and if so ... why?

    I know my mom's cl500 has this as well it is designed to be used when the car is in winter mode and will provide added traction when backing up in bad weather situations IIRC

    Ahhhhh... So it has that winter mode thing where it launches in 3rd going foward and uses a taller reverse gear too. Vewwy interesting.

    Yeh! GF in college had one, IIRC, it had a turbo too.

    4 speed with 2 speed case.

    Yeah.

    (you caught me after I deleted the comment BTW, figured nobody cared).


    After the second oil crisis they made the Colt with a high -low lever and a 4 speed manual.

    You could actually up shift in reverse, although no bystanders ever seemed to notice how totally cool that made me. :)


    BTW it was a Mitsubishi prior to Mitsu selling their own name here.

    Let's not forget the never beloved Doug Nash 4+3-speed in the '84-'89 Corvettes.

    They stopped making replacement transfer cases, I think rebuilt parts are very limited supply right now.
