2003 360 spider F1. Yesterday whilst dropping from 4th to 3rd and accelerating to overtake, there was a dreadful clunk, clunk noise. Initially I thought a large stone had bounced under the car a couple of times, but it happened again when I repeated the manoeuvre later in the drive.

The car seems to be driving fine and if I change down from 4th to 3rd as I am slowing down, it changes smoothly and doesn't happen.

May not be related, but I have also noticed it is a little difficult to drive slowly in 1st or 2nd as the clutch engages and disengages producing a little bit of "kangarooing". Clutch wear was 20% last service. I guess PIS could need adjustment.

Any ideas? The car is going in later this week, so I will be able to give feedback if anyone is interested.

2 questions, have you changed the gear box oil and were you going around a bend when you heard the clunk

Not changed gear box oil recently and I was on a straight. I do have some play in front lower ball joints which are being replaced later this week, but I don't think it was them. The noise seemed to come from behind me (just), towards the middle and lower down.

I wondered about engine or gearbox mounts as the gear change happened fine, and there will have been more transmission movement because it was a downshift whilst accelerating. Thanks for the suggestions.

On most cars, if you put your foot on the brake and give a tiny bit of gas, look at the engine to see if it lifts on either side. If it does then its an engine mount. The same may apply for our cars not sure. Maybe someone else can come in

Well, I've taken the car in.

I explained the issue to the mechanic and I did not like the look on his face!

His expression and teeth sucking, intake of breath had way too many ££££$$$$$s attached for my liking.

    We will see!
