I have a 79 308 and I would like to eliminate some clunking noises from the rear and front ends of the car. Most friends seem to think that the noises are related to rubber bushings. How many bushings are involved; which ones are most likely the culprits; and can they be changed with only the average tools? Also, where is a good place to purchase them? Thanks

Your clunking is most likely coming from the shock bushings. Nice weekend job to replace and can be done with normal hand tools. Do a search using suspension as a keyword and you will find a wealth of information on this topic. Although shock bushings will probably fix the clunking, you may want to replace the A arm bushings with upgraded poly bushings while you are at it.

Another alternative is to replace the shocks and springs altogether. Also many threads on this forum covering such.

    Good luck,
    John

Good luck! I have been trying to find the source of a clunk from the rear end of my 308 for a year. I have rebuilt the entire rear suspension, replaced all the bushings (shocks and A arms) had the shocks rebuilt. Clunk still there. I think it might be a worn engine mount!

I'll be interested to hear what you find.

I agree with looking at the shocks, shock bushings, and swaybar end links and mounting points. All these will cause lound clunks. An engine mount is possible but less likely especially if you are getting the noise front and rear. Sounds like the suspension needs a looking at.
