What's the different between the 308 and 328 clutch? The 328 seems to have much softer feel on the pedal it's like night and day diff. comapre to the 308 pedal that are stiff, is it the mechanical lever was re design, 328 have hydrolics system, diff. preasure plate or what? I just thought it'll be nice to have the soft feel of the 328 clutch pedal on the 308.

Hydraulic is the reason even if the clutch is different. Its one of the reasons auto makers made the switch from a cable (among other reasons) Self adjusting is another.

Depends on the 308. In 1980 Ferrari redesigned the pivot to reduce pressure by 20%

If you sit in a 77 you will feel the difference from any 328. If you try my 308 QV you won't be able to tell any difference.

on your qv? If so, you already have the newer pedal/spring/linkage setup. If your clutch is heavy, either someone has put in the older style pressure plate, you have a mechanical binding issue, or the helper spring on the clutch pedal broke off.

if you mean just in general on pre 1980-81 (approx) 308's, then it's a combination of the pressure plate, clutch pedal design/helper spring and linkage external to the bell housing that makes the effort a lot higher.

no 3x8 car has a hydraulic clutch. Some/all of the mondials do, though.

Thank for pointing that out phil, it's been this way since I bought my QV a year ago, I hope it did'nt get replace to the old style cause mine feels heavy compare to the 328. I will check the helper spring hopefully it's there and if it is, then it must be the old type pressure plate. I know it's not binding cause it feels smooth when depress.

    That's what I thought - cable actuated.

do check the plastic pulley where the cable exits from the tube under the floorpan (around the fuel pump area). That thing tends to collect dirt and freeze up.

otherwise, anything in any docs you have that shows a clutch change, and if so, did they itemize the part numbers?

I popped a clutch kit into a friends 308gtsi a few years back, and about 6 months later replaced the pressure plate because it was uncomfortably stiff. The new pplate made it like my 328.

if you are down to needing to do the pplate, it's not too big a job. I can loan you the special socket you'd need to remove a ring nut. If you have an impact wrench, the only thing that can require more than a couple scotches is if the bell housing is stuck on.

All that's needed is the pplate, three o-rings, maybe a new ring nut if the existing one has been reused already, and a few ounces of gear oil to replace what's in the transfer case. I used hylomar instead of silicone/rtv/whatever on the bell housing and xfer case cover, which made disassembly the second time almost pleasant.

I had a heavy pedal and thought it was just the nature of the beast. I noticed a bit of reduced effort after replacing the cable and housing.

When i had the belj housing off, i noitced that the throwout bearing holder was quite difficult to slide over the input shaft collar. I got it off and noticed gauling and a rough serface. I could see how it might get cocked a bit and be one of the major contributors to heavy pedal. I did a lot of filing and cleaning, replaced the presureplate with a rebuilt unit, (from Centerforce-another story) and Viola, much reduced effort - almost like a "regular" car - still a bit stiff but much improved.

    hope this helps,
    chris
