Ill measure it but It looks okay. Jut covered in think gunky greasy stuff! Sooo: can it be cleaned? If so with what? Where do I get tripleseals?
The seals can be bought from Ricambi. Try cleaning the disk with brake cleaner, scrub it good, it's worth a try.
triple seals ordered... im going to wait and hear from some of the super studs on here to chime in on the clutch cleaning...i was thinkin..go non invasive first and try dish soap and hot water? now i have to find that triple seal install post i read!LOL something about covering the splines with plastic or something? NEXT?? okay so i have the thing apart...kind of..i acltually only have 3 pieces... 1. the pressure plate assembly 2. the loose 3. the housing with the flywheel that is against the clutch plate... actually you can see the 3 pieces i have in the pics...1 picture of each LOL
okay i just read this thread \..all 10 pages http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=296614 my TO bearin spins super smooth and does not appear that any fluid is coming from it. so should i take it apart and replace seal in it? not too sure i need to start replacing just to replace buuuut? im a newbie to this...
Your problem doesn't appear to be a SLIPPING clutch (disc material worn out), it appears to be a DRAGGING clutch, due to the oil-soaked disc lining material. In this case, the newer and thicker the disc, the worse the problem. The manual says a new single plate disc should be 7.7mm thick, plus or minus 0.3mm. So if there is more than 8.0mm thickness at rest, it's probably going to drag. I don't think grease is really going to impregnate the lining material, so you should be able to give it a good cleaning in "brake kleen" solvent and reuse it unless the material is below the wear limit, or it isn't perfectly flat. It may be time to just replace the package, if you want it to last. But you have to get that leak fixed one way or the other.
thanks jeff...thats kinda what my thinking was...triples seals are on the way...i dont think it leaked much cuzz there is no signs of dripping anywhere...
You need to check the flywheel. Because if you have grease all over the place the flywheel will need to be taken apart, cleaned, repacked with grease, news seals, and then put back together. As for cleaning up the grease, brake cleaner.
Sean - since you have the TO bearing in the open, change the two outside seals - the same two I changed in that thread you just read. They are relatively inexpensive (less than $20 for both), one of them was responsible for the leak I had so replace yours now so you won't have to worry about a leak in the near future. Also in that thread is a trick for the triple seals installation Feel free to PM or email me if you want to discuss this further as this is fresh in my head from the repair I did last fall.
Yep, after a closer look you are right. Yep, brake 'kleen' (whatever they sell there) should clean it up real nice! Buy a few cans if need be to clean it properly.
Ok...so I starting looking closer...oil from tripleseals has that gear oil smell...it has the same smell as the oil on the clutch disc...I'm 99% sure all my greasy gunk is gear oil and clutch dust. Disc measures 7.5 ish mm all the way around evenly and flat. No obvious damage anywhere on flywheel or pressure plate.
okay this is crazy how tight these seals are...so i know the plastic trick but WOW...so can they be slightly prestretched or warmed up!
i think i have worked out a solution...i took a swaging tool(for expanding copper tubing so it is gradual increase in diameter.) and slid the seals over it slowly, as they stretched i moved them up further...just a little prestretch i guess? where i could excert better force with my fingers than on the shaft...
WOW...okay so i used the prestretch method and it was easy as pie to get these seals on! stretched them to the same diameter as the spline shaft...put some packing tape over the splines and slid them right on without any sore fingers! used a piece of plastic from a teflon spool to wrap around them and hose clamp to squish em back down....then tapped them into the housing with gentle pressure... changed the fluid out with redline NS and put her back together...shifts waaaaaay smoother and no grabby clutch...looks like all went smooth....so far anyway!! thanks to all who had advice...ernie, pap, mike, and all others as well. i honestly think the prestretch is the way to go..it literally took me 10 seconds to put the seals in place with no sore fingeries!!! i still have to put the bumper and heat shields back on! LOL THANKS AGAIN GUYS! SEAN
Excellent work Sean, and congrats on a fine repair job that you were able to do on your own in your own garage.
Good work Sean! Glad to know it's all better now, and thanks for the update. Oh yeah, and for Mikey up loading the pics for us to see.
Just so I'm clear, you changed the triple seals, the o-rings, and the seals in the throw out bearing, correct?
Great thread and I learned a lot. Why is anybody starting the car in gear? Just a check on the clutch? Taz Terry Phillips
after talking with daniel at ricambi for 20 minutes i decided to just change the triple seals...TO looks new and may very well be...i know the dealer did a major on the car just before i purchased it...need to look at service papers to see what all they did.
