I've searched the archives in the forum for related topics and am pretty certain that my flywheel needs to be re-packed (grease on/around the lower bell housing vent, "chatter"/vibration from the rear at idle, etc...). It would seem to me that if the grease has leaked out it would have contaminated the clutch discs as well. So question one would be; can I expect to replace the clutch discs if the flywheel needs to be re-packed?

Question 2 is simply out of curiosity (and may also help answer question one) - At what point in the clutch pedal travel should the clutch engage (i.e. halfway, three quarters, 3 inches, 4 inches, etc...)?

My clutch is slipping and "engages" with about an inch and a half of pedal travel left so I'm positive it is all connected. Really just want to know if the clutch discs are salvageable.

    Thanks guys.

By "salvagable" do you mean "reinstalled as is" or "relined and installed". Regarding your other questions, I'm certainly no expert and I would wait for them to chime in but my guess is the clutch travel sounds like replacement is about due or will be soon. If your going to repack the flywheel now, get some new plates/bearing in there. Worst case is you have a brand new clutch and a used spare set of plates you can reline at a more leisurely pace. Is yours an earlier twin plate? Just re-read your post and profile data...SS #8 will be the single plate model. My clutch on SS #64 engages between 1/2 and 3/4. 1.5 from the top of pedal travel sounds excessive and worth investigating.

I assume you've been to ND's place. It may have exactly what your looking for

If you are gonna tear it down and repack the flywheel you may as well get the clutch done too. Though you don't have to by a new one, you can send your old clutch out to get resurfaced with new material. I think you can get new material put on the clutch for something like $300+/-.

Yup, that's what it sounds like to me.

While you are at it change out the triple seals on the output shaft, I think they are something like $15, and check the condition of the throw out bearing.

Well unless I misunderstood what he posted, I do seem to think that he did find grease flung around the bell housing, and it's making the tell tale "clacking" sound. But the only real way to know for sure it to remove the bell housing and have a looksie. What ever the case it's gonna have to get opened up.

    Im with Ernie. :):)

Pull it apart and see whats going on in there. :):)

That clutch engaging that high would indicate a worn clutch. But....if there is grease all over the clutch plate, then one would think it is slipping because of that?? :):)

So.........just pull the thing apart, see whats going on in there, then order the parts needed for repair. :D:D

I am going through a clutch rebuild right now. Just normal driving and lost hydraulics...cracked slave cylinder housing. Once inside the clutch we found gear oil leaking through, so as Ernie said, replace those triple seals while you're in there. I replaced the pressure plate and clutch, and of course needed a new slave, Hill Engineering to the rescue for that.

Thank you all for your input. Given everyone's response and comparing it to what I actually see, I think my problem may be a combination of the things mentioned. The amount of grease around the bell housing vent isn't substantial (certainly not to the point where it is dripping) it is more like an accumulation of grease and road grime, but the noise at start up is distinct. Though I haven't noticed the chatter/clacking when shutting down I am going to check it out to see if it's there.

Now the only question is wether I have the b@11s to crack this thing open and do it myself or do I take it to Competizione.

I've already done a bunch of work on the car since I've owned it similar to work I've done on other cars I've owned, but I will admit that I've not done a clutch before. Given what I've read and researched though, it does seem pretty simple and worst case scenario is I screw it up and pay to have it towed to Competizione for them to finish.

I think I read somewhere on here that "it really isn't messed up as long as you can afford to have someone else fix it"

Yeah, not hard to do man. If you do a search, many threads will come up that can help you. :):)

Here are two threads on it when I did mine. But....I didnt really take too many pics when I did it. But its a start for you. ;);)
It only took me around 30 mins to get it apart mate, so its not that hard if you can swing a few spanners. :D:D

There have been recent major threads showing flywheel grease repacking to triple seal replacement also. Just have a look. Hopefully others may have the links to them somewhere and they will post them here for you. :):)

You could make one, like I did and a few others have made in the past. :):)

Or........Ricambi America sell a Hill Engineering one for around $100 I think? :):)

Have you got your clutch apart have you? :):)

Thanks Pap - was going to check Daniel's site today. I haven't gotten into the car yet to see what is going on because it is in a friends' garage while I epoxy coat my garage floor - some cool stuff going on in the garage that I'll post pictures of in the showroom. I wish I had a welder, etc... to fab my own tool (that sounds kinda wierd) but unfortunately I don't. If I go ahead with this project myself, I'll probably just buy the spanner tool - then I'll have it and gladly loan it to others if needed.

For those - Pap included - who have taken on this project themselves what's the list of parts I'll need to do this job 100%?

You may be lucky.......others may lend you their tool to do the job. ;);)

I would replace the triple seals, throw-out bearing, clutch plates, re-pack your flywheel and change the gearbox oil. That is doing the job 100%. :D:D

But you can probably re-use the throw-out bearing and clutch plate if they are ok. Just clean them up and you will be right.
As mentioned though, you probably wont know what its like in there until you pull it apart. So get cracking man. ;);)

I've had your site bookmarked since the day I bought the car - thanks for putting that together. Great model info and the clutch step-by-step will be invaluable.

    Again, thanks Pap.
