I am about to replace my failed clutch, and I want to do the other "while you're in there" work on the housing seals. I purchased what I thought was the rear main seal, which Superformance describes as a "clutch spigot shaft oil seal." Then I noticed another seal available for purchase called the "flywheel oil seal." Is this the one housed in the throwout bearing support piece that's attached to the bell housing. Or is that yet another different seal? And if so - what is the second seal I have pictured? Or do I have the two seals confused for one another? These images were pulled from f-chatter ramosel's flickr gallery from his teardown a few years back.

I am aware that these images are from a QV rebuild; my car is a 79 GTS, which I think has slightly different bell housing setup, so please feel free to chime in if there's any difference in seals or setup that I should know about. I've found a bunch of threads on clutch service, but few - at least illustrated - on the seals. Thanks.

Further confusing me, I NOW see that Superformance has an item actually described as a rear main seal, which is different from the others:

Not a fan of seals or gaskets from superformance. I would call AW import and tell Dave or Stacey what you need and they will ship the right stuff out quick at a good price. Ricambi and T. rutlands also sell quality seals. If you need a driver for the rear main go to Home Depot or whatever you have in your area and pick up a 4" PVC cap and you be able to knock it in flush.

You should do the rear main seal. You will need some triple bond for the bell housing trans oil pathway that feeds the drop gears and the drop gear cover...as well as the two o rings that go between the bell housing and trans input shaft. Personally, I used TRutlands on all of these items. I called them with my year and they sent the goods. I believe there are some variations on the small bell housing o rings....so model year specific. I didn't mess with the seals on the clutch shaft in the back of the bell housing.

Thanks to both of you, but the question that remains is WHICH seal is which, in terms of where it goes on the car? I've tried deciphering this from the parts diagrams, and still can't figure out which is the flywheel oil seal, the rear main, and the clutch spigot shaft seal. Thanks.

you can contact them and ask but I would would still recommend contacting the other vendors when it comes to seals and gaskets.

Rear main seal is part number 163989 which is not referenced in the superformance page.
    Call Dave 800-631-5589
Tell him your project and wham-o quality parts will be at your door.

103021 o ring, 104214 o ring, 103877 pilot bearing, 106244 rear main seal from Ricambi America diagrams.

Looking at your pictures from SF pages...yes that looks to be the pilot bearing and one of the rear mains they offer. However the 105389 part number links to camshaft seal on RA. And you found another version...probably different manufacturer and different material. The 200323 supersedes 163989 and are linking to 360s and later cars on RA diagrams.

I would definitely call on these items.
