I've got a '98 550, 22,000 miles - runs perfectly, however occasionally I notice a pulsing from the clutch as I release the peddle. This happens with moderately aggressive driving shifting from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th.
Aside from that the clutch seems good, good bite, no slippage, good peddle feel... All I can think of is an out-of-round on the clutch disk or the fly wheel. So is this a problem that needs immediate attention or something to ignore until some major service requires getting into this area?

Sounds like the system needs to be bled. Might as well change the fluid while doing it.

Thanks, I expected a more involved fix

Speaking of the (manual transmission) clutch on the 456/550, I never read posts about the clutch needing replacement on these cars - whereas clutch replacements are all over the board with the V8s. It almost seems like a 360 can't go more than 20k miles on the same clutch assembly!

Have I just missed the obvious or are clutches on this generation's V12s inherently robust? I know that most 456/550s aren't driven extensively but even Dean Halter's 456 that was recently sold on BAT with 80K (!) miles didn't list a clutch replacement in the "work done" laundry list of items.

The V12 clutches are tougher (and thicker) to handle the torque and V12 drivers tend to have more experience driving three pedals than V8 drivers. Obviously a statement that has many exceptions, but the V12 population tends to attract drivers very familiar with three pedals, even those driving F1 575s. The 360 and F430 population is also largely made up of F1 shift systems, 70% 360s and likely 85-90% F430s, and uneducated use of F1 will tend to wear the clutch more rapidly. More of our V12s are 3 pedal by total proportion.
