My "new" car needs several things, but most importantly a new clutch. I've searched and found much useful information here and want to thank everyone who's contributed. Makes the job look easy. The information here at http://www.camerafilters.com/ec/clutch.htm was extremely useful. After diving in, thought I'd share a few of the details I've encountered.
Fender well removal was easy. Next I removed the air duct and tried to raise the oil cooler without disconnecting it's lines. I found a coolant hose was blocking it from moving up, so loosened the coolant reservoir and then was able to lift up the oil cooler enough for access.

Next, I drained the gear oil from the transmission, then the drain on the cover in front of the bell-housing. I tried to use a couple of pry bars to pop the cover at the top without success, so decided to fab a small pry bar with a flat face to contact without slipping. This worked perfectly to break the cover loose.

Now I'm waiting on the arrival of the special tool for removing the lower nut. At least this first bit went without any surprises, so very happy with today's progress

Which replacement clutch are you going with?

I'm considering an OS Giken twin-plate clutch when the time comes to replace mine. Anyone here have experience with these?

I'm going to use a factory type unit from Ferrari Parts Exchange. Its currently on back-order but hopefully will be available very soon

I would go with a kevlar clutch, my 328 has 45,000 miles on the one I had installed. They are way stronger than the factory units, you can get all the power right to the ground, and if you want to burn a little rubber without doing any damage, the kevlar is the way to go, not that you will. The kevlar clutch like I said, is way better. Forget about the back order, you can get the kevlar unit immediately . I know this because I have lit up my tires more than anyone who has ever owned any Ferrari, and my clutch is rock solid , my car has 105,000 miles...I have 255 45 17 s for rear rubber, and can smoke them up at will with no problem , my clutch is bullet proof, its that simple.

Gino, if you want to make a recommendation that is actually helpful, you should include a link to where the OP can actually buy "the kevlar unit" that is available immediately.

Im not sure about who has them, I know that they are after market, and just thought the fellow could most likely get one much faster than the one on back order. My bad. When I had mine installed it was 2003 , by the shop that was doing work on my 328 at the time. My Lord, I cant believe its been 20 years since I had the kevlar clutch installed. Maybe Nicks Forza can get them.

Yes, we use them on every build. Excellent clutch assy. You get a new flywheel and clutch with TO bearing in the box.
    Lots of build options.
Highly recommend ordering before you start. Japan mfg times can be frustrating sometimes.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll do more research. Not planning to drive this one hard, but would like a clutch disk that will last

I don't like bringing up the topic of gear oil because I know how oil discussions can go, but I've searched here and found many recommendations for Red Line MTL. When I looked at this it appears to be 75W-80, not 75W-90. Many posts recommending MTL were from years ago. Was the MTL gear oil once offered in various weights? Is the current 75W-80 MTL recommended?

Its also offered in 90. Since I am not cruising the Autobahn and getting the gear oil very hot I am perfectly happy running the lighter weight oil. I personally know of a couple of 308s that have been using it for over 100,000 miles and the transmissions are still perfect.

I have seen many stock Ferrari clutches outlast the engine. My own 328 when I rebuilt the engine I put the old clutch back in. It was still fine. It is the same clutch used in a Daytona with less spring pressure and those had no issues either.

I will never install a kevlar clutch in a Ferrari. I have in fact been asked to remove a few by people who like me find their operation unacceptable.

A friend who is very proud of his kevlar clutch in his 512TR has blown up the gearbox 3 times. When I drove it I told him it was because it is so abrupt. There is nothing gradual about the lock up and its applying far more stress to all the driveline components.

FWIW, I light up the tires on my 328/stock clutch on a regular basis, including "barking" them into second and the stock clutch has no issue with that treatment at all. In my experience, including a LOT of time on drag strips, the main thing that wears out a clutch is riding it, not aggressive starts/shifting.

I don't know how its done. I have never worn a clutch out. Ive put 200,000 on a couple of cars that still had great clutches.

We have been programmed to believe our 3x8s are made of milk chocolate and balsa wood. Well, I suppose the air cons are. Haha!

So you are over in Panama City, eh? I live in Freeport and will be following your progress. I did the clutch on a '79 308 years ago and found it to be very straight forward. My 328 hopefully won't need one soon.

I used Shell 75 / 90 for most of the years that Ive owned my 328, it was synthetic. I recently had my shift shaft seals replaced and they used Redline 75 / 90 full synthetic. Ive never ever had any problem with shifting into 2nd gear when cold, or any other problems whatsoever in 105,000 miles and 25 years on.

Like Rifledriver I never went through a clutch ever. I don't see any need for more than stock clutch in a stock 308.
I'm sold to Redline transmission oil. I saw a noticeable difference in my Testarossa just switching to Redline.
