I step on the clutch pedal and my first thought was "the clutch cable snapped". Then by the end of the pedal travel, I feel a little resistance. I shift gears gently, not sure if the clutch is working or not. And the shift is fine. On the next shift, the clutch pedal feels normal again.

This has happened to me 3-4 times over the last 6 months. One time, this condition lasted for a couple of gear shifts.

    What might this be?

    Thanks in advance,

    Manny

    Manny - I would worry.

Might be simple, but I would carefully inspect the cable termination on the bell housing. Make sure that the bolt holding the large "helper" spring is securely tightened, that the pivot pin is not excessively worn, that the adjustment rod is not free to "rattle" vis-a-vis loose lock nuts, and that the clevis is intact. If all of these are as they should be, then do the same on the front end. Failure to identify pathology would lead me to get under the car, disconnect the clutch cable from both ends, and:

    1) slide cable back and forth to assure free movement of the cable,
    2) depress the pedal to assure free movement,
    3) move the actuator fork (at the bell housing) to make sure that it rides on the "ball" properly, and that the fork "ball and socket" retaining clips are not broken.

Finally, the pressure plate springs may have failed.

If you truly have a zero resistance pedal until near the end of travel on several occasions, there is, in the words of the great philosopher Robert Preston, "...trouble, right here in River City."

    Hi Jim,

After I posted this, I thought "of course I should worry...it's not normal". I had my mechanic look it over and he said everything looks correct. But it happened again just yesterday. Just once. But it happened. I'll have it checked again 'cuz I feel worried.

Thanks for your detailed info. I'll pass it along to whomever checks my car.
