    I have been getting the CEL and the OBD II code 1428. The car runs fine, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out what the problem is. I noticed that both purge valves were previously replaced. One of the codes for 1428 states left bank purge valve. Well, I replaced the drivers side purge valve and still get the CEL and 1428. The Actron OBD II states "Auxiliary emission Control" HELP - this is driving me nuts!!!!

    Here is what I was able to find.

    P1428

    Evap. Em. Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit (Bank 2)

    Possible Solution:
    Open (sig) Check the wiring Check functionality

    Ernie, thanks for replying. I just read your 8 page post back in 2009 about a problem with the Evap valve on a 348 (looks just like the same valve on the 360). How would I check for the open Sig on the wiring? Thanks

    This weekend I started the car and disconnected the house that leads from the purge valve to the charcoal filter. I then disconnected and reconnected the electric plug going to the purge filters. There was not any pressure or vacuum either connected or disconnected on either purge valve. So when and how does the purge valve work???

    Chris,

    Who ****ing cares what they do. :) The important thing is the system is detecting an electrical issue with the valves or mechanism. Its detecting an increase in resistance, or delay or lack of actuation of the valves. That's the only thing that the computer can pick up.

    So have you cleaned the grounds on that side of the engine? If not, you'll see the ground bolted to the frame beneath the engine panels. Unbolt it and scruff it with some sand paper or metal wool.

    Wiring problems are tough to find. Do what you can and if that does not take care of the problem take it to a good tech. Or buy a lot more booze

    Curt, thanks for the tip on checking out the ground. Jack, you are correct, electrical problems will drive you to drink (more than usual).

    Odd, the purge valves were replaced by a prior owner. I can tell by the different clamps used to re-secure the valves to the hoses. I think (hope) that the person who installed the previous purge valves connected the electrical connector to the wrong valve as they are located next to each other. If they disconnected both wire leads, then there is a good possibility that he connected the right bank to the left valve and vs versa. Although the OBD II reader stated left bank purge valve (code 1428) it was actually the right valve. I changed the valve out on the other side - so time will tell as I am driving the car today.

    You should have better luck now that you replaced the other side. You have to remember that many of the Ferrari intakes run from one side to the other, so while the fault says bank 1, the port/hose that affects bank 1 (passenger side) may physically located on bank 2 intake (drivers side). Why this matters is because the oxygen sensors are what tells the engine control unit if the valve is in fact open. It will read a slight rich condition and know this is normal because the valve is open. If a signal is sent to the valve and it does not open for whatever reason, then the oxygen sensor will not see a rich condition and flag a fault. Hopefully the attached photo clears it up some. (i've never acutally attached a picture on here so forgive a rookie if it doesnt work) Good luck - Josh
