How often do you have CELs?

  1. Rarely

  2. Sometimes, I just clear it and move on

  3. Frequently

  4. All the time, I ignore it now

My car seems to generate a random number of codes. At one point it had 6 codes, yet ran perfectly fine.

I have a CEL from the bypass being wired open. Out of curiosity, I pulled the "codes" the other day and to my elation found only 1 code - p1448. Months ago it had 5 codes for random stuff like cat efficiency (bull****).

Really weird, but not surprising considering we're talking about a f355 here...I didn't expect the codes to just clear up by themselves.

Been lucky so far, in 2 years of ownership no CEL's; once had to deal with an intermittent SDL, but upgraded the original "black" cat control ECU's and problem was solved.

Car is stock with the exception of hyper flow cats and tubi. Just passed smog here in CA (star station - which for those of you that do not have the pleasure of being in CA, is designed to meet higher performance standards - thankfully they did not challenge the presence of hyper flows) with no problems and very low readings.

    I hope my streak continues.

P1448 is the only code I've had...and that's only when I leave the valve open for 10 minutes or longer before it comes on.

As soon as the CEL comes on, I just close the valve and clear the code.

    Need to get test pipes.

In 3 years I have had two cells. One was for a bad O2 sensor. Replaced sensor and the code never came back. The other was for Lambda control adaptive value which came on right after I did a smoke test of the exhaust headers. Took the car out for a good run and the light when off by itself and never came back. I'm guessing the O2 sensors were contaminated by the smoke test and once the contaminant burned off all was good. The car is a 2.7, stock except for Nuvolari cats.

I had about 12 various codes shortly after I got my car home. The previous owner said "it would through an exhaust code from time-to-time" Uh yea...

It took me a year, but I tracked and corrected each & every one. Great learning experience and nary a code since. It was a "bonding experience" :)

Tim, the resemblance between that picture and one I recently saw of you with a mutual friend is uncanny. :)

I've had the SDL pop on twice for a few seconds but it turned right off. The check engine light has never triggered.

If you have a code(s) there is an issue.
During the last decade I had to replace one exhaust thermocouple (failed) & the spark plug wires (3 wires had intermittent continuity) and this addressed the cel issues.
These cars actually run very well when issues are correctly diagnosed/repaired.
The only other recommendation I would have is to periodically clean the wire contacts with electrical contact cleaner.

For the 9 people that rarely get codes, would be nice to know what their average mileage a year is.

I've put 5k miles on my car in 3 years. As I said, I had two real CELs, not ghosts. To reiterate, the fist CEL came a couple of weeks after I got the car, maybe 500 miles. Bad O2 sensor. Replace it and that CEL never returned. Second CEL came about 2k miles ago. Lambda control. Cleared itself, and never came back. I suspect it was contamination of the O2 sensors with mineral oil after smoking the exhaust system. When I stated the car after smoking, the CEL on both the 1-4 and 5-8 banks (2.7 car) were going crazy, coming on, going off... and the car ran like crap. The exhaust would burn your eyes. Very rich. A blast down the highway cleared things up. Car's been perfect before and since.

Frankly I don't really consider these CELs since they were related to actually issues, not intermittent ghosts.

I drive 3500 miles each summer for the past three years.

Prior to that this was a CEL machine! :)

No cel, have only had it for less than a year. I think less than 1500 miles, I will have to check.

If you never get codes, have ever looked at an OBD readout on your car?
