I never thought I'd be posting "coffee mug" on a Ferrari forum, but given the California's role as a DD or near DD, the issue is actually a real one. My wonderful Starbucks double-walled vaccuum stainless mug just barely fits the California's pop-out cup holder, but due to its curved walls, doesn't seat fully. It maybe goes down half-way into the holder. Fine so long as you are only driving sedately, but the other day I popped the accelerator a bit to get by some traffic and the mug flew out and bounced around the seat! Luckily it was empty and nothing was damaged.

So, I'm now in the market for a genuine stainless steel double-walled mug that not only fits, but keeps the contents hot and has a travel lid so as not to splash or spill. Before I take careful measurements and do a Google search, any one have such a mug that's been tested to fit and point me to a source?

One more thing. I would prefer one with no Ferrari shield or other Ferrari logo. No sense tempting someone to break my window for a Ferrari souvenir. Mug mfr. logo would be OK, though no logos at all preferred.

Are we expecting too much after paying $250k+ to have a location to put in a coffee mug? I guess Ferrari thinks so. You only solution is go to Italy's starbucks:)

    Here is a quick solution.

Find a short paper cup which has a wide mouth and will fit into your california cup holder.

Now see if your current coffee mug fits into the wide mouth of the paper cup and is stable. (Put mug in paper cup which is in cup holder)

I keep a few of these paper cups in my cali and can now accommodate large soda bottles and larger plastic cups.

It's not yet April 1 so not sure the discussion about the size of the cupholders in a Ferrari is timely :)

I'm guessing there won't be a lot of helpful suggestions from those of us outside north America :)

But on a (slightly more) serious note, I don't think I have cupholders like the one pictured on my right hand drive UK delivered car

I won't have access to my car for another two weeks to check, but are cupholders only fitted to USA market cars?

I have a circular "thing" under the armrest and assumed it was a cupholder

What's the situation with Non USA spec cars, do we miss out on the cupholder

Not that I really care, I uphold the James May tradition of not eating or drinking in my pride and joy

    My car is a 2009

EDIT: I had a look on ricambi...
    http://www.ricambiamerica.com/parts_catalogs.php?M=FE&P=&V=diag&I=114084

It looks like there IS a cupholder for US market cars

It's interesting that Ferrari intentionaly leave off cupholders into all the other markets for fear of the stigma associated with the perception of a Ferrari having cupholders

FWIW, for this market, for this car, I think all of them should have cup holders standard, as well as electric seats and cruise control.

The paper cup work around is a good tip. I will do that until I can find a suitable mug. BTW, the ring on the holder is about 7cm in diameter and 4cm deep.

Now to find one that fits...

This has a 2.8" (7 cm) base and may fit: http://www.gocontigo.com/autoseal-aria-stainless-steel-travel-mug.html

I have the 20 oz. version (which has a base that is 2.9" dia at the base) and can vouch for how well it for how well it works for either hot or cold beverages.

Thanks! 2.8 in. is about 7cm so it should fit. The 16 oz. size at 8.8 in. is a bit tall, so I think I will try the 10 oz. size.

FYI, the 10 oz. size is about $23 each, and shipping is $8.75. But if you order two, for a total of ~$46, shipping is free.

And FWIW, I poked around the Internet a bit and found Car & Driver's test of...coffee mugs. The Contigo was their choice, although in their "drive-away" test, the lid came off when it landed and the entire contents spilled. http://www.caranddriver.com/features/a-mug-for-the-morning-drug-coffee-container-torture-test-feature I think the answer is to get one short enough so that drive-away failure is unlikely.

I think the answer is to drink coffee at your home or office and not in the car :)

Couldn't help it, and as i suspected still no help on cup sizes from outside north America :)

You will likely find these locally at Target, Wal-Mart, Kohls, etc.

The "Autoseal" lid is screw on and will not leak if it falls out of the cupholder and is rolling around (been there, done that).

So true. The more gadgets and accessories that are fitted to cars = more complications and things to go wrong.

I remember when I started to work on cars as a teenager, and hear people talk of cars of the 60's & 70's and good mechanics needed just a screwdriver a hammer and a couple of spanners.

Now you need a plug in computer ( most important) , spanners, sockets, allen keys, torx ( and you cause yourself alsorts of problems if you try and use the wrong one or don't clean out the inside before trying to slacken ).

However I think the ideal solution would be to talk with an interior specialist, or somebody who can customise with leather and ask to put a cup holder in the rear centre as near as where your arm would be, I don't no why they haven't been supplied with them. That way you can customise the size to suit yourself and then just reach round yourself grab your cup.

Well, my Contigo mugs arrived today. Sorry to report that while they "just" fit into the circle of the holder, they're "just" big enough they don't go all the way down into the holder. Note that this particular model is spec'd at 2.8" dia. at its widest point (not counting the lid), which is about 0.1" or maybe 0.2" too big at the bottom. The search continues.

Nope. All cars need a cup holder. Look at the race cars which have a drink system and climate control and a headset.

All this banter about how Ferraris should or should not have cup holders really underscores how revolutionary this new generation of F-car really is. No one would expect the driver of a "normal" every day car to not have the ability to place his drink securely during his/her drive. The fact that there is even a debate about this indicates that Ferrari has come a long way and it's new owners represent a different breed who actually drive their cars. It's so refreshing to see this! I myself will soon be a new Cali owner. What remains to be seen is:
what type of owner will I be.....

Will I use the cup holder or not???

Cup holders are great for holding a bottle of water to drink while driving along the Pacific coast on a nice sunny day. :)

Then again, I long ago got over the blasphemy of having a sports car with wind up windows instead of bolt on side curtains. ;)

Found a mug that fits the California (all the way into the holder), doesn't leak (when closed), doesn't fly out of the holder upon hard acceleration or pulling Gs (at least so far), and keeps the contents hot for extended periods. It's a Thermos SK1005MB4 Vacuum Insulated 16 oz Midnight Blue Travel Tumbler. The list price is $26 but sometimes you can find them on sale at Target for far less. It even looks good and tested well in the Car & Driver coffee mug test. http://www.caranddriver.com/features/a-mug-for-the-morning-drug-coffee-container-torture-test-feature
As noted above, the 10 oz. Contigo didn't fit, despite being smaller overall and holding less liquid.

You are right, a TRUE sports car allows you the joy of getting very wet when it rains too! But I am now 65 and a little tired of getting wet so moving on from the MGA to the California made sense:D The power and brakes and sex appeal had nothing to do with it. :D

LOL Rick when I drive my vintage Jag in San Francisco fog I can somehow manage to scoop enough moisture between the top of the windshield and the "sealed" convertible top so that water runs down the inside of the windshield into the back of my dash, causing me to worry that the Lucas electrics will short out!

N4Speed - thanks for the tip on Thermos.
