Is there any way to check oil without running the engine first? Should it at least register on the dipstick?

No. The motor must be run to full operating temperature before you check the level. Its a dry sump motor.

You have to run the engine and use the dip stick. Or if you have drained the system, fill her up with 11 liters of oil, then you know it's at right level.

The reservoir is empty when cold, so nothing on the dipstick
You could purge the engine and measure what is coming out :)

As noted in another thread, you could pour in 3 quarts when cold and it will be "filled". Then you will be posting about all the SMOKE and the advice will be along the line of ..... Did you overfill it ? Reading the manual on occasion helped me, yes it is written "funny" but there is a lot of info in it.
