I have taken the cold start valve off and found it to be opening and closing as it should but it does not attain a 100% seal. The barrel closes 100% but I can apply the pressure of my breath to it and it does leak somewhat. Is this normal or defective?
I can't find anything in the books that suggest a perfect seal or not. Anyone know?
    thanks as usual, Lost

I still don't know what the correct answer to my question is but I reinstalled the cold air valve and it works fine even though it does not effect a 100% seal.

Are you asking about the cold start valve or the auxiliary air valve?

Cold start valve. The AAV was toast and I replaced it with a new one. After inspecting the whole system I find that the barrel valve closes 100% when the electrovalve is energized but I can apply my breath to it and detect a slight leak. I couldn't varify if this was normal or not so I reinstalled it and drove about 60mi today and the idle increased by 200 after idle heat set in. I dropped it a couple hundred and I'm not that concerned, I just want to know what is correct. thanks for the reply, Tom

obviously you are asking about the cold start "air" valve ;) ?

the cold start "air" valve is part of the fast idle circuit and injects additional AIR during the warm up phase

the cold start valve injects additional FUEL during the warm up phase

what was the question again ? ;) ...
(I eliminated the fast idle system completely btw...one less potentially faulty circuit)

picture showes the cold start air valve in the right lower part (the bulb)
and the cold start valve with the blue-green connector (right side of the plenum)

I don't think that's the cold start air valve. The cold start air valve or better: auxiliary air valve is the one bypassing the throttlevalve. It's located between the plenum and the airbox below the messuring plate. It should be open at cold start providing auxiliary air and is bimetallically closed after a certain time.

I am confused. the question is -------------- Should the cold air valve have a 100% seal or is a little leakage within spec. lost

Due to its design, 100% seal when hot is never possible. The Bosch specs say "closed" and any leakage, per se would be compensated by/for with your hot idle speed adjustment.

Fastradio, thanks , I was suspect that was the case but I'm at the bottom of the learning curve. Everyone on this forum is fortunate to have people that know and are so willing to share. peace, Lostbowl
PS where would one find the Bosch specs?
