My parents are urging me to go overseas to Poland for college. Fortunately, i am bilingual, and I would be attending a "polish ivy league" school, for business. Its really far away from home, and i dont know if i would be able to manage everything on my own at that distance. I do have some family in Poland, but no one i would want to count on to see every day or very frequently.

Im mostly preoccupied with what i would be facing after getting my degree. Would i have better job opportunities when i returned to the states? I mainly want to have my own business, but i can't just jump right into being an entrepreneur.

Im not sure if my degree would be respected to the same degree as if someone graduated from New York University or the like.

Thanks for any advice guys i appreciate it

If i go to the college im looking at in Poland, you supposedly graduate with two degrees. One from that specific college, and one from the Univeristy of Illinois, or Chicago, not sure which one.

I would be staying in my own apartment which would be cool, but on the other hand i would be alone and not dorming. Its a real hard issue to consider, i just want to make sure im not going to be behind anyone when i graduate. I want to accomplish the most possible.

I am currently just researching, i will be applying in the Fall. My GPA is about a 3.9, AP classes, etc. I was considering BU, NYU, Fordham, but not sure which road to take.

The American economy is good, but its lacking with the European Union, and i just want to make the smartest choice possible since i still have a chance to change everything.

    Thanks

I hate to make this sound overly dramatic and obnoxiously judgmental, but, unless the degree you're going for is either from Oxford or Cambridge (and even then you might have to think about it), absolutely do not go overseas for school.

Your degree will not be respected by American employers at all. Most won't know what to make of it, and even more won't respect it.

There is a reason that the world sends its young to the US to be educated.

Polish chicks + your own apartment? Bingo!

On the other side, your degree won't be worth much (unless your polish school is extremely renowned). You should rather study in the US and study abroad for a year ... at least that's what I'd do.

+1 for study here and spend time abroad. Although putting "polish busty" into google makes me think you should just go ahead and stay through your phd.

i have gone overseas to study, currently in the UK now. best idea i have ever had. i have not seen "issues" with getting employment in the US so far, granted the work will be with more international companys, your not going to be going to the local company back home and get a job there. however i am 95% sure i want to work in the UK so that is not my main problem. your problem though seems a little different than mine, i came to the UK cause of the jobs i was interested in, not the experience/location.

+1 -- I personally know of people who have went overseas, and it isn't working out as well for them. They would have been much better off going to a state university.

I'm surprised at how many foreign students i have in my MBA classes -- from EVERYWHERE...india, saudi, japan, thailand, taiwan, korea, brazil, argentina...

Stay here. If you want to move out of the country later, it seems that U.S. graduates seem to find employment a little easier. win/win, although you miss out on the cultural experience....which you don't have to, if you spend a semester [or a year] abroad.

If you’re wishing to obtain a degree purely for employment purposes (something I wouldn’t recommend) then, in my experience, degrees acquired in the country where you wish to work can often be the most profitable, with the obvious exception of some well-known universities. However, I feel that university/college is about life experiences too, and learning abroad will definitely put you in good stead when it comes to life experiences.

As a side note though, I didn’t have any problems in 2002 when looking for employment in the US with UK degrees. In fact, I’ll go as far as saying that I felt in some interviews I was receiving preferential treatment. I also had a higher response to application ratio in the US. Remember this is only a small sample size though.

From a purely educational standpoint...bad idea.

If you are going the corporate/firm route...

4 year U.S. college degree from best school you can in engineering/finance/accounting/MIS/computer science/business administration(must be top of your class)/economics(must be top of your class) with the best possible grades you can get
    +
    Summer internships at top companies/firms
    +
Employement with a top company/firm for 2-4 years
    +
    High GMAT score
    +
Top tier U.S. graduate school for your M.B.A.(if you can't get in a top tier school it won't be worth your time or money IMO)
    =
    $$$$$$$$

For law, medicine, or staying in education/research, you'll have to follow a different path.

You could also replace 4 years at the best school you can into to with the following if money is an issue:
2 years with the best possible grades at a U.S. community college
    +
Transfering into the best 4 year college you can get into to complete your remaining two years

There are certainly other paths and a million other professions where things are different but that is the traditional tride and true way to be "successful" these days in the business world.

Note that no where in my unasked for advice did I mention a foreign school :)

People from all over the world come to USA to take advantage of our extremely amazing schooling. Elementary to middles to high school and most importantly the colleges in USA. There are Universities in USA that are out right 100* better than even oxford. The only reason you'd want to travel overseas is if you are studying architectural or if you want to go to culinary school. If you are doing business, don't even think about it.

DO NOT go overseas for school unless you want to be majorly hampered by that albatross around your neck for the rest of your life.

Many of my family went to college in Europe and it has been nothing but a MAJOR detriment to employment in the USA. Conversely, a US education is quite valuable when you want to get a job overseas, the reverse just isnt true.

For business - getting a Polish education in leui of a US one would be like getting a degree in Business Administration from that correspondence school that Sally Struthers used to hawk on late-night TV and thinking it will be a good career move :)

All posts above have nailed it in the head. US college system is arguably the best in the world and recognized everywhere so from a professional stand point there's no question.

From a personal experience point of view probably going off to Poland or other European country sounds like a great thing.

My advise is stay in the US, enroll in NYU or similar and go to Poland as an exchange student for a semenster. That way you get the best of both worlds.

BTW I came to the US for grad school and was the best decision ever. Considered England, France and Germany at some point but my options were far greater studying in the US.
