I helped build the building back when I worked for a Naples Masonry construction company. We also built Miles Collier's beachside mansion down in Port Royal. He had separate AC units installed just for his back porches so he could have a cool breeze watching the sunset whether nature provided one or not. The porches couldn't be closed off and weren't even screened. Just AC air pumped out on a roof covered deck. It was pretty demoralizing to work on that house all day in the hot sun and then go home to a hot house because I couldn't afford the electric to run my AC :(

I also remember a time when the Collier Museum had put one of their cars on display at what is now the Porsche Dealership on US41 and when it came time to take the car back they just drove it in traffic down 41 and out to east Naples to the museum. I can't remember what car it was but it was definitely a race car. Might have been a 917 but I'm thinking it had an open cockpit. I wasn't a car guy back then but I remember riding my bicycle on the sidewalk along 41 as I did daily when it came rumbling by.

All these years and I've yet to go inside the museum so I'm really looking forward to it the next time I visit Naples. I know they used to not allow photography. I hope that has changed. :)

When I attended, they allowed photography just not flash photography.

So, unless you have a tripod or monopod, its a bit tricky.

Only a small (but important) part of the total collection came from Cunningham. The centerpiece, the Bugatti Royale, was sold off soon after Collier acquired the Cunningham collection.

    Yes. I remember.
I've seen some of the Revs's collection at the Lime Rock Historics and it will be great to see the rest but seeing the stuff I saw in the seventies in Costa Mesa again will be a bit special.
