My name is Edgar and I'm a model builder that want to start the building of the excellent Ferrari 330P4 at 1/12 produced by Model Factory Hiro.

    1/12scale Fulldetail Kit : Ferrari 330 P4 [Closed body] » MFH

My question may look obvious but I want to be accurate as possible and I wanted to know what color was it painted then.

I use Zeropaints that are automotive paints formulated for each car witha 2k clear.

My doubt from Zero Paints cart is between
    - Rosso Corsa (322) Slightly Lighter than 300
    - Rosso Corsa (Red) 300
    - Rosso Formula 1 1960's

Can some one tell me wich one could be more accurate for it?

Thanks in advance for your help and for this great forum.

If interrested I'm posting some pics of my works and you can see them at

    Edgar,

I would repost in the "Vintage (thru 365GC/4)" section. More chance of getting a response.

Very nice work by the way!

    Agreed, very nice work...

The problem with trying to be true to the original P4 color and finish is that these cars were painted at the time with lacquer and it wasn't done to a high standard. The bodywork wasn't pristine and dents and damage from "rubbing" was quickly hammered out and touched up. Lacquer was great for that since it didn't take much work to buff out the overspray and get on with life.

This also relates to the "depth of finish" and color. Back in the day they were red, but it wasn't a deep color that you could "look down into", it was actually a pretty flat red and in some places it didn't look that great.

Also, because it was lacquer it chipped easily and any front facing surface was chipped all to hell by the end of any typical endurance race. Look at the pictures of the P4's at the finish of the Daytona 24 hrs at the time and you'll see what I mean.

If you want to be more period correct you really don't want to use a modern paint with a clear coat, you want a correct red, shoot it in lacquer and then don't do much buffing or trying to make it perfect.
