I just spent $560 on toner for my two HP 2840s (only $999ea!) I think I ended up with the cheaper 2000sheet (hah at 5% coverage, my ass, more like 500 sheets at serious full-bleed printing.) carts.

Toner is disgustingly expensive, considering it's just damn powder, can these suckers be refilled?

Aparently hp put in a 'smart chip' that's main purpose is to prevent refilling!

I've not been able to find the smart chips for less than $15ea. With a new cart at $70 that's ****ty.

Any ideas? The landfill mass created here alone is just disgusting (and I recycled the drums themselves!)

Lastly, HP needs to come out with a solid-ink based, single-pass 20ppm color laser AIO for $1500. I'd buy four of 'em.

I'll spend about $500 for all of the cartridges for my new $700 OKI color laser when they go out...Yipppeeee. Before I started refilling the black cartridge toners on my B/W HP laser, I threw it away and bought a new one which saved about $25! I did that three times. It's too bad that the cost models on these printers makes it a better deal to throw away a perfectly good printer. I hope the color refill kits will be out soon.

How do the refills work? Does your priter have the 'smart chips' that basically do nothing but force you to buy new carts (or replace 'em at $15ea?)

If I can find the same color powder, I'm all over refilling these bieaotches.

HP now has a 2600 color laser for $399. I bet it's cheaper to chuck it than buy new toner, sigh.
