Thinking about getting the bumper and hood repainted on my Rosso Scuderia red 458. The previous owner did not have PPF so the car had a number of rock chips when I bought it, making it not worth it to add PPF. Needless to say I’ve added a number of new rock chips and I’m at the point where a repaint of the bumper and hood (followed by PPF after an appropriate amount of time for curing) just now makes sense.

My only concern is color match. My car is a 2010 with 30k miles so being 12 years old there is inevitably some fade compared to when new. I’m very concerned the colors will just never match.

Any thoughts on getting a good color match? Anything I can do or tell the body shop to ensure a color match?

Red is easy to match as unlike yellow, the human eye struggles to distinguish various shades of that colour. A good match should not be an issue.

Ask the body shop to do a "spray out" before they paint your car. Compare the sample to the car in sunlight or under a sun gun. Don't authorize the painting until you approve the sample. A very good body shop should not have a problem with this request, especially for a Ferrari.

Red can be as difficult as any other non pearl color. There have been instances where we have done 10 or more spray out cards, every time slightly tinting and toning colors till they were "right on'. Some times it takes a lot of patience, particularly, when you have a car and the left front fender is one shade, the right fender is another shade, the hood is a third shade, all subtle shades of "the same" color. That is where skillful matches of different colors applied sets apart the pro's vs. amateurs !

… and not to mention matching the texture, which may not be much of a problem in outdoor, natural light, but can often easily be seen under artificial lighting conditions.
