    On my 328 I checked the oil after a run and it looked good. It was a nice amber color. But there was fine black residue. I am not used to this on my modern Japanese vehicles.

    What is this? What does it mean?

    Also, on a related note, I checked the oil right after the drive. The oil read below low. I got very scared. After reading through the FChat archives for an hour or so I checked the oil again (engine was warm) and it read right in the center. I forgot about the "wait 15 minutes" part of the procedure.

    Thanks,

    oil level sounds fine. Color: when was last time you changed oil and
    'residue': where?

    Regarding when the oil was changed, I need to check the records but I believe it was changed before I received the car which was ~200 miles and ~3 months ago. I know, I should know this. Please don't beat me.

    The residue, not really the right term, more like fine black "dust", is on the dip stick, then wiped off on the paper towel I use to wipe the stick.

    still doesn't state date is was done. I always replace all fluids on car when I buy as a starting benchmark. that way I start my own date of changes, know what's in there, who did it, and feel much more secure. IMO

    Sounds like carbon... A new oil filter/change can't hurt.

    from google....

    probably no big deal. Time for a new oil change/filter...

    <snip>

    Oil in your cars engine has two purposes.

    One is to lubricate all components in your car's engine to stop metal-to-metal contact, which causes rapid bearing wear or failure.

    The other is to flush away all carbon that is produced in the combustion process that may get past the piston rings and capture them in the oil filter.
