I don't know if folks out there are even aware of the existence of the SCCA Time Trials program: http://www.sccatimetrials.org/ It's like a track day, except that your car has a transponder on it. You are out on the track with 10-15 other cars and passing is allowed on the straights. Competitors are scored on their fast lap of the day. A typical day has a qualifying session to sort cars into run groups, followed by about 40 minutes of competitive track time (either a single block or two 20 minute sessions.) It's a nice intermediate arena for those who are interested in a bit of friendly competition, but aren't willing to risk their car in a wheel to wheel club race.
