Just turned on my pc and the colours are off. The screen seems quite a bit dimmer and going from left to right the screen loses colour. It goes from regular colour {bit darker} to the middle, that's where the colour starts fading off and in the right side it looks nearly black and white in areas and in others colours are changed. The usually red "X" in the top right corner is now a blue "X" along with my pop up blocker icon which was red but is now blue. I went into the control panel and the graphics card is said to be working, it's about a year old and the colour and lack of brightness effects everything, browser, desktop, pictures, taskbar etc.

    What's the cause and fix???

EDIT: and half of the icons on my desktop are "aligned" along the left side instead of scattered around like usual.

I don't mean to be the boy who cried wolf but everything seems to have corrected itself. The brightness is back, no odd colours appear and no more gray/ pink strips. Odd.

Maybe the connection was a bit out? Try tightening the screws connecting the screen and computer.

Ditto - you beat me to it! All it takes is 1 pin to be out and you can get this sort of symptom.

or a bad cable. My cousins monitor cable is so loose it turns the colors all red. It it keeps happening, you might have that problem, unless it's just loose.

If everything is tight (power and monitor cable). You might have had a bit of a power surge or decrease in voltage as well. It only takes a few volts high or low (or peak or valley) to temporarily change the color for a few minutes.

During power outages in my area (before my generator kicks in) - you sometimes will get a little rainbow effect between UPS and Gen kicking in due to just a few milliseconds between the UPS kicking in.

Make sure you are hooked to a surge protector to help in little spikes. The tolerances of most LCDs is pretty high, so usually will not be permanent or damage, but can cause some color issues at times.

Everything is tight now, here's a question.

Should I only have my cpu hooked up to my surge protector or can I hook my speakers etc in the same outlet? Would having two surge protectors in the same outlet in the wall cause a "low power" issue with a pc?

Depending on the circuit you are attached to - I would guess a 15 amp. You could have a few surge protectors and many components and not worry about it. You would trip the breaker before you had a low power situation.

CPU, Speakers, Monitors, etc - no issue.

I have my ups (which monitors Voltage) hooked up to a single 15 amp breaker/outlet. I have 2 quad core PC's, 1 laptop, 3 Monitors, 3 external HD's, Speakers, 1 cable modem, a Cisco router, a Shredder and a HP CP3050 Color Laser (the big ones) and I hover right on 119 volts and just at 10.x amps.

I doubt you would have an issue - 2 surge protectors should not be a problem if you wanted to go that route as well.

Power fluctuations is more of an issue of power conditions in your area. You might consider a UPS for 100 bucks you can get one with a display and it will kick on if the volts spike or go lower plus you will know if you are getting fluctuations.

Remember low voltage is much worse on equipment than high as a general rule. The lower the voltage the higher the amps to make up for it - higher amps = bad for technology type stuff.

Run my computer off a battery backup plugged into a surge protector.
Computer gets clean modulated power from the battery and the muddy brown garbage is only recharging the battery.
My hardware runs so problem free since I set this up.
