I was in Topeka, Kansas last weekend for SCCA Club Racing. Next to the track is the Forbes Field Combat Air Museum. I first went here in the eighties as a kid with my dad. It has grown quite a bit. I really enjoy air museums. Most of them give me a somewhat haunted feeling as they're generally in large spaces and are only supported by a minimal volunteer staff. You generally have free reign to walk around and explore. There is also the overwhelming sense of history "if these planes could only talk" packed into a tight space. There was only one other family making the tour when my mom and I went, we barely ran into them only once or twice, so the silence and aloneness really added to the haunt. We had less than an hour to tour everything when an hour with each plane might have been sufficient.

    Yes Rob, What he said!!!....

If any of you get to the NY area There's a very nice air museum,
located at Republic Airport, (KFRG) and they have, among others,
    a Hellcat, a flying DC-3 (or C-47), a Corsair f4f, and a B-25.
It too is maintained by a "skeleton" all volunteer crew.

Top off the trip, with a visit to a separately owned restaurant.....
at the other end of the airport.... Which is done in the style of a
bombed out WWI air base, (somewhere in France) complete with
a sandbagged entranceway, all sorts of WWI paraphernalia hanging on
the walls and ceilings, and military vehicles from the era, and later,
on display. and you can look out on the ramp area while eating,
and see some WWII aircraft at tiedown.

    Truly a dining experience.

What a great resource - Who of us would have known that they had such a chance to see this in Topeka, Kansas!

Unfortuneately, I probably won't make it there anytme soon, but the next guy I meet at an airport headed to Topeka will hear about it!

The only thing missing is a cadre of Explorer Scouts and volunteers to rebuild these things.
    Great shots.
