Back in 1984 I read my first "high speed" test in Road & Track. I recall reading about a 512BB (174 mph), a turbo porche of some sort, a couple of vettes, a countach, and I don't remember what else. Why do I remember the 512BB, in detail, and above all else? Because it was a FERRARI: red over tan, 12 cylinders, no trunk to speak of, prancing horses, and a chrome shiftgate that will always remind us of its relationship to such famed red beasts as the '64 250 GTO.

As the years progressed, I remember a number of "high speed" tests conducted by a number of magazines. A certain yellow Ruf turbo seemed to reign supreme for a couple of years, but was that really a "factory" car? It also seemed like there were always a couple of heavily modified vettes giving everyone a run for their money, but until Callaway could keep one running through the entire test, who cared? The Countaches were always impressive, but they always seemed oh so touchy and tempermental.

One constant, however: there was always a FERRARI invited. Not some specially modified one-off mind you, but A FACTORY Ferrari. Fly to Modena, pick up your Testarossa, drive it to the test track, throw on a helmet and VROOM, you're instantly competing with some of the best engineers and tuners in the world. Sure, the custom jobs usually nosed the ferrari on top speed, or 0-60, or 1/4 mile, or yadda yadda. But THEY were often TOWED home at the end of the day, either the result of a burnt clutch or the lack of trust on the part of their owners, etc.

These days, the factory vette runs and competes like the best modified ligenfellers, callaways, and any other hot tuners of old. Impressive, really. Kids will still stop to look at a vette (or viper) in a parking lot, even if it's just a factory car. The vette is a bad ass car, it is really something to behold, 500 hp, etc etc.

But is this really any different than the days of old? The vette was always hot, and so were the other customized exotica the tuners and privateers were putting out. Heck, Porche built the 959. But they were never, and are still not, FERRARIS.

What "supercar" did you lust after as a child? A FERRARI. Which supercar could you drive across country, race on the weekend, and drive back home without having to carry a garage full of tools? A FERRARI. Which supercar had the history and pedigree that you could study for years and still learn something new about? FERRARIS. Which manufacturer has consistently produced the dream car for virtually every generation of slathering boys dating back to the 1930s? FERRARI. Which manufacturer, out of sheer love for the marquee, continues to improve its FACTORY cars so that they will always compete with the best in the world? FERRARI. Which manufacturer put out the 430, a car that is simply astonishing considering it is the "base" model? FERRARI.

When might I start worrying about Ferraris losing their position against vettes, vipers, hot-hatch scoobies, Ford GTs, SLRs, DB7s, or SL600s? When Ferraris are no longer INVITED to the high speed tests. Ferraris have always been able to compete. The 288 GTO may never have actually gone 190 mph, but who cares? It was THERE, it was FANTASTIC, and it was a FERRARI.

Given the performance of the 575M and especially the new 430, I have nothing to worry about. Let your hairy chested neighbor rumble up in his new 500hp Z06. Is it really any different from when he rumbled up in his 427 stingray? Drop the clutch in your Daytona and give it a whirl. . .

I've always loved vettes, and they of course have a ton of history. Although I used to despise the early 1980s era vettes, today I can honestly say I even like the 1982-83 anniversary edition, but more for nostalgic reasons than anything else. Vettes are great for what they are. How could we not expect chevy to put out a 500hp monster?

However, vette "history" simply pales in comparison to that of FERRARI. Vettes struggled through the 70s and 80s with plastic bumpers, T-Tops and 180hp. Notwithstanding the odd 400i or mondial coupe, Ferrari blasted through that era with Magnum PI's 308 GTSi. Some ferraristi may dislike calling it the "Magnum" era (and I can't blame them when e-bay sellers use that term for their 308s, ugh!), but kids like me grew up on that car. When the 288 GTO came out, we were HOOKED.

Imagine my surprise and delight the first time I saw the movie "Gumball Rally". A Ferrari with an engine up front?! Without a back seat?! With 12 cylinders that were NOT horizontally opposed amidship over the transaxle? I was introduced to a whole new generation of Ferraris, and that one was just as fantastic as the current one. I was hooked again . . .

As for the rest of my generation, it may have taken a little longer to discover the "mystique anciens" of Ferrari, and it may have come from a source even more controversial than our good friend in Hawaii. Can I even utter the name of the movie in this forum? How about the car?

Yes, notwithstanding the un-authenticity of the source, an entire generation was introduced to what the previous generation had known forever. A "proper" Ferrari has a few necessary components: RED paint, TAN leather. 12 cylinders UP FRONT. chrome BORRANIS. CONVERTIBLE top. And, perhaps most of all, built in the the FIFTIES or SIXTIES.

Most of us kids had heard of (and lusted after) the 275 NART Spyder, but there were only 10 of those. For us, the movie presented an entirely new world of convertible 250 PFs (or whatever model that car was supposed to look like), built over the course of TWO decades. ALL with 12 cylinders. ALL the car of choice for movie stars and international celebrities. ALL as fast as anything on the road at the time. Could it be possible that Ferrari had an even BETTER era than the 1970s and 1980s?

The point? It never ends with Ferrari. Know every last thing about the 500 Superamerica? How about the 410 Superamerica from an earlier era? Know the 1950s TR history cold? How about the pre-war Alfas badged for the first time with the yellow shield and prancing horse?

Vettes have their own great history. Bob Bondurant, concept stingrays, fuel injected 350s, 427s, fiberglass. All wonderful stuff.

But the old man himself put out the F40 before he breathed his last. How can you beat that?

A corvette could take me all the way to Mars and back, but for me it is a creation for people who care more about speed than quality and for red necks so they can have an "exotic car" to dream about and if lucky to someday own one. For me a vette is just a piece of crap, and thats any vette, even the ones that win major racing events. My life feels so miserable right now because I will never be wealthy enough so I could buy GM and stop production of vettes forever. Just the name of the car sounds stupid. A cheap and nasty thing and another one thats even worst than the vette is the viper. Thats it I have to go away and clear my head, feel like going to the toilet.

My friend this is U.S. of America and we all have the freedom to say what we want. I did and now you just did, so be happy for it and relax. I see you are the corvette type so I dont need to call you names. This is after all a Ferrari site and fans and owners have all the right to defend Ferrari in any way.

I certainly wasn't criticizing your grammar...nothing wrong with it, especially if English is not your first language. That comment was directed to our friend volkswagnracer...no capitalization, no periods, numbers instead of letters. The internet has pretty liberal grammar, but his is just horrible.

Anyways, glad to see you aren't as angry at Vettes as I thought. ;) I still think your first post was a bit of an angry-rampage against Vettes, but I understand the anger at mis-matched races.

I don't have a problem with people who don't like Vettes...just people who say they are junk because they are American/affordable/old-tech, and people who don't give them any respect because of those same reasons.

Personally, I am still not convinced this 'race' even happened...and until I see a video I am still skeptical.

haha, I don't have a type of car, and no I don't have a corvette. I wouldnt be so arrogant as to dismiss a car based on its name or history though.

You're welcome to your right to defend ferrari's as is anyone. But it can be done in a civilized manner withou resorting to sensationalization and bigotry.

Since I lost you already as a customer I may as well tell you that your comments are what really is dumbassed! Maybe you should stop thinking about others as elitist but rather go to work and give that little more to make a little more to be able to afford that little more.

But by your comments you will never make it past the trailerpark. Looking at others and calling them elitist because of the brand of car they appreciate, whow you display some great intellect.

I am not arrogant, I maybe didn't explain it better but I will try again. If the corvette was the only car in the world then I rather walk or even crawl, I dislike the car, I don't know why but I just can't stand them. For me hell would be to own a corvette. I know that it is an icon and that it can perform but I dislike them very much. I even went for a hot ride in a callaway twin turbo convertible but still didn't like it.

    haha. Wow!
I work very hard and I earn a good amount. I just bought a 997S and a XJR. I'm doin fine and am quite capable of affording that little more.

If you actually understood my comments you would see you making a fool of yourself once again. I love Ferrari, I love everything about them that you do. That is why I am a memeber here. I would never call anyone an elitist because they enjoy a certain car, certainly not a car I also enjoy.

This is the definition of an elitist:

I don't mean people to insult as the few red necks I know are proud of what they are. Is part of my heritage to talk and express in certain ways and we might sound arrogant but thats part of my culture, we dont get offended by minor things, we are to mature for that or pretend to be or who cares. Have you ever visited Italia,France, Spain? Maybe you get the picture. By the way I also drive a 996TT.

Handles like a truck, can't turn, blah blah blah...

Z06 turns in lap times consistant with 360's. But who am I to let independant verification get in the way of your appraisals.

I'm sure all of you who bash its handling capability have had piloted them numerous times on the track and driven them extensively, thus have them "mastered".

For the record, it will never "be a Ferrari" and the Enzo is a masterpiece, though an ugly masterpiece to me, a masterpiece nonetheless. A shame some of you car enthusiasts refuse to see around the rossa tinted sunglasses.

Testacojones, this article is for you, baby!

This thread is hilarious. How did this turn into a e-brawl? A street race happened between an Enzo and Lingenfelter 427TT Vette. Both are extremely *good* cars (the Enzo is on another level though). I mean good in a sense of engineering *good*. No one would be ashamed to roll up to a car show in either.

If anything Ferrari owners should feel proud that the Enzo gets attention such as this. No one would give a crap about this race if it was a 355 or 360 vs a 427TT Vette. The Enzo is special. It is the king of the hill. No one is saying otherwise.

Furthermore, why would anyone get their panties in a wad after an Enzo did get beat by a heavily modified car. A heavily modified Supra/Viper/Vette/Skyline could beat virtually any car produced by a major automobile manufacturer. To deny it would be to deny the obvious.

Even more furthermore, what's with all the hate on Vettes. They are absolutely well engineered vehicles for their price point.

I love shopping at WalMart and Sams Club to buy food and usefood goods for the house. The good performing batteries for my flashlights a few cases of Coke, Pepsi, Orange Juice from WalMart. I get from Sams the cool Sony computer and digital camera and tons of snacks and drinks for when I entertain guests. Those places have some great stuff.

But when I want to buy something for my wife, I go to the most expensive jewelry store in my hometown city of Chicago. If she got a promotion at work or we celebrated a special occasion, I will take her to the most noted restaurant on the north shore.

The Vette rocks, it is so dependable, present, cheap and abundant. An Enzo is special, rare, you love it fast. My choice is both. I think you can live with the everyday awesome presence of a car that you don't have to worry about but have endless performance is stellar and that Vette has that in Aces. But the Enzo, if that was in my garage I'd treat the car so much more gentle, like it was my only love in the automotive world... both are great, who cares?

    RocketBoy

PS: In either case I would take the Ferrari and Vette to shop to Sams. And if you are really nit picky I bet the Vette would have better storage but alas, the kids in the parking lot would like the looks of the Enzo better.

Not sure about the 'Vette, but that black Enzo in your picture is NOT the black Enzo you raced... It's not even one of the two black Enzos in Palm Beach during Cavallino... In fact, the black Enzo in your picture isn't even in this country... i'm not sure if you were just trying to make a quick chop representative of the mature ownage you came here to brag about, but the Enzo depicted is NOT the one you saw...
