Common 348 Corrosion problems.

I was looking over a 348 Speciale yesterday and it had some bubbling around the rear pillar/rear fender joint. Haven't found this on mine yet but it does seem to be prevalent.

???? Heat from the engine? Not likely. If engine heat caused this, then why no cracks on the top of the engine bonnet, directly over the source?

From discussing this with a couple Ferrari service techs, the thought is that this is caused by body flex. There appears to be a support that run from the chassis up to near that joint. The flex from hard driving or rough roads may be transmitting this to the joint. They noticed it more on cars that were tracked. You can clean up the rust, and fill the crack, but it may come back....I have seen it return on cars that were repaired.

Sounds suspiciously like stress-corrosion and metal fatigue. I know a few similar areas when "normal" cars (like the good old Escort MkII !) get tracked or rallyed. Usually at base of "A", "B" or "C" pillars.

Just what I was told by a few people who know far more about the cars than I. Although the engine cover doesn't have any welded joints to crack.
