Anyone know what would be a good used commuter car for $6-8k? I had been using a 2000 xkr coupe until someone performed a u turn into me and basically totalled the car. I'm thinking about getting the car repaired, but weighing options. Thinking of going beater because the people in the northeast cant drive worth a crap.

    Thanks,
    Jim

I have a 2001 Ford Focus wagon and absolutely love it. 120,000 miles and going strong.

I have Subarus as my daily driver. Have had them for years. My '04 Forester has 255,000 miles and runs like a top. Nice low mileage examples in that price range.

If gas mileage isn't an issue, find an '01 & up Suburban. Comfy, reliable and will destroy anything that hits you.

Why not just find anoher XKR or XK8? There are always some available (many more XK8 convertibles than coupes) around on the high end of your price range. I would guess that the bottom for those cars is near for a fully-functioning example. Drive it for a couple of years and sell it for not much less than you paid.

Another Focus owner here. I bought a ZX3, 5 speed for peanuts. It gets 35+ MPG on the highway, has a decent ride, and is ok to look at. There are a few specific issues to deal with on them like the keylock job, and motor mounts, but for the price it's hard to beat.

Thanks for the response guys! I think I'm going to rebuild the car. There are no XKR coupes available in this area for the price and mileage. I like the XKR for the seamless power and torque that the XK8 just doesn't have, plus the mercedes tranny in the car is a reliable unit, and the zf in the XK8 can be an issue. A couple other things is I just installed a water pump in the car, and had the fuel pumps and harness replaced. Shouldn't be too bad to rebuild as I can source the parts myself and save some coin.
