i've just learned the hard way that best buy's geek squad call up help is completely useless. my 2 month old compaq is restarting in a mode where it seems like it's a brand new computer, all my files are gone, it's a new background, my pictures are gone, the office program completely is missing, seriously, i absolutely hate vista. any ideas? trust me, any advice you give me is better than the support i just got on the phone.

Have you used the built in disk cleanup app and a 3rd party registry tool? There's a bug caused by some poorly designed 3rd party registry tools that causes all personal information to be lost when running the built in disk cleanup afterword.

I had that same problem with my machine. After a long time searching pages and pages of forums with people that have the same problem and no solution I ended up re-installing vista and eventually installing xp.

    Sorry thats not much help.

thanks, it's 2 months old, under warranty, for the past couple of weeks, i would turn the computer on, and my icons would be out of whack and a different background, usually a restart would take care of it, but not this time. i'll be taking it to best buy tomorrow, and hopefully what they can do is get all my documents off of my harddrive and give me a new computer, best case scenario.

the computer itself works fine, i'm using it right now, but i'm missing most everything, pictures, music, documents, most of my programs, thank god the computer is so new and i haven't transferred everything onto it, but still, it's a major pita.

Have you tried going through the hard-drive and looking for the office program or looking for other user profiles that may have your missing pictures/documents etc...? ie try going to c:\users and see what profiles are there. Make sure you've got hidden files enabled. You do that by opening up my computer, press alt, select tools, folder options, view, files and folders, hidden files and folders and select "show hidden files and folders." Then go root around c:\users and see if there are some other profiles there with your documents. And um do you mean the Microsoft Office Suite or some other office program when you say "looking for the office program"?

When was your last virus definitions update, last virus scan and have you done one with the latest definitions after one of these restarts? Simply put, Vista doesn't do this, or anything like this, unless something is going very wrong somewhere. For something to go that wrong there generally needs to be user action or 3rd party software involved. The only thing I've found similar click here is someone who is experienced your issue with XP SP2 two years ago. His issue was a corrupt profile and that could very will be your issue. For vista these two links 1, 2 can probably help you out if you want to explore that possibility.

Yeah because Macs never, ever, break or **** up

just got back from best buy (will probably post a rant about their warranty program later) and apparently my computers been hijacked. i had kazaa and some other filesharing program somehow downloaded onto my computer...it definitely wasn't my doing...and pow, my computer is under attack. they're doing a diagnostic repair on it, thank god the computer is so new to the point where i haven't even transferred everything onto it.
