So back in the day - you bought a 1995 Ferrari F355 for $ 118,000 or a bit more Congratulations. Here is the list of the other "sports" cars considered as competition from that year For 1995 Acura NSX Alfa Romeo GTV / Spider Aston Martin Vantage 5.3 V8 Aston Martin DB7 Audi RS2 BMW M3 E 36 BMW M5 E34 Bugatti EB 110 GT+ Catterham 21 Chevrolet Corvette Chevrolet Camaro Cizeta-Moroder V16T De Thomaso Guara Dodge Viper RT/10 Dodge Stealth Ferrari 512 M Ferrari 348 Spider Ferrari F50 Ford Mustang Lamborghini Diablo Coupe Lamborghini Diablo Roadster Lotus Elan S2 Turbo Lotus Esprit Turbo Maserati Ghibli II Mazda RX-7 McLaren F1 Mercedes AMG Mitsubishi 3000 GT Coupe / Spyder Mitsubishi Eclipse Nissan 300ZX Nissan Skyline GTR R33 Panoz Roadster Pontiac Firebird / Formula / Trans Am Porsche 911 993 Porsche 928 Porsche 968 Renault Alpine A610 Toyota Celica T200 Toyota Supra Toyota MR2 W20 TVR Chimaera Venturi 300 Only 2-3 on this list that could replace what the F355 can do and those are priced then and now at many times the F355 cost.... Let's hear any additional cars I missed or what you liked or didn't like. 1995 would have been a good year to go to the local Ferrari dealer or Maranello... So when people talk about what cars they think are better than the F355 - refer them to this apples to apples list of what was available new that same year Robb
Both naturally aspirated with individual throttle bodies. The good old days Still think the 355 is prettier but would not turn down seat time in an F50! Actually there are a bunch of cars I would like to own from that list.
From that list, the only ones that even vaguely interest me are Lotus Esprit, NSX, and McLaren F1. I'd also like to drive an F50, even if just for the sound, but it's not exactly a "looker".
I did miss the McLaren F1 from the list - that the F355 and the F50 make 1995 a fantastic year for the 90's!
Everyone knows sports cars achieved perfection in 1995. I could fill a 10 car garage with my favorites from that year.
TVR Griffith: 0~60mph: @ 4.1~4.7 seconds* Top speed: @152 ~ 169mph* (*Depending on engine model and the car actually working!) Due to it's short wheel base and aggressive power deliver, it some ways it was an even more exciting driver than the 355 (and more often than not a damn sight scarier!) Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 3 or 4: 0~60mph @ 4.9 seconds Top Speed: @ 149mph On a decent twisty European back road, the 355 could actually have it's work cut out trying to keep up! Morgan Plus 8: 0~60mph: @ 5.6secs Top Speed: @ 128mph Okay, it's not going to come close to troubling a 355 for top speed but that's not what the Morgan Plus 8 is about. You need to be a real enthusiast/masochist to own/drive one, but the Morgan Plus 8 will give you a driving experience like no other car! - Including a Ferrari! (It will most likely rattle your teeth out in the process, but you'll still have a big gummy smile on your face after a drive!). It's an automotive dinosaur! It's interior is cramped, it bangs and crashes around on the road, you'll freeze your posterior off in the cold cockpit on all but the hottest of days and it makes no logical sense at all in the modern World of automotive creature comforts! However, it will also charm you with it's "Olde Worlde" ways and give you a taste of what the "golden age" of motoring was like! And thinking slightly outside the box: AC Cobra (or one of the myriad of AC Cobra kit cars at least!) The AC Cobra is more about brute force than finesse but it's one of the most exciting cars ever made! If you can look past the fact that it's not an original/genuine Cobra, with the right engine and chassis set up, the performance can be mind blowing (and a tad scary!), and a 355 simply isn't going to keep up! Similar to the Morgan Plus 8 though, it's a tad cramped in the cockpit, it lacks finesse, it can be tiring to drive, and you have to be a fan of the car to live with them day in -day out. Okay, these cars are not exactly direct rivals to the 355 in the same way that an Honda (Acura) NSX or the Lotus Turbo Esprit is, but they do offer an alternative to the 355.
F50 and Mclaren are a class higher. The 355 prettier in every way but not a super car to that level. The 512M is a georgeous beast I would have loved to own. Honorable mention, Porsche 993, 928 and the Skyline(cars I love). There are some big money cars on your list that I could care less like the Bugatti and Cizeta.
I was standing in line at the grocery store the other day and overheard two old ladies arguing over this exact subject and thought to myself " if only someone would compile a list of competing models that were also available that year " . I entered the discussion and said , eager to show these two old bags the amazing capabilities of my new i phone ," let me check ferrarichat to see if such a list exists " unfortunately at that time , it did not. Now it does . Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Wow! Now there's a sentence I never thought I'd see! Personally I think it's an abomination, especially compared to the previous 512TR which was the pinnacle of that particular design. IMO, of course.
Have to say I totally agree! The headlights look wrong, the round tail lights look like a home-made after market mod rather than being an integral design (Lotus made the same mistake fitting round tail lights to the esprit - They just don't sit right with both cars angular rear ends), and the wheels are just too busy!
I was only 12 in 1995 lol, but I had models of the 355, a nitro R/c 355, it was my favorite car on 'need for speed 2'. so ya, it was on the top of my short list for cars in that year. Our neighbor had an 355, 355ch, 550, F50 and and F40 and so i was hooked young. I mentally put my favorite cars in two categories, 'obtainable' and 'un-obtainable'. The other 'obtainable' cars of that period i really like were the 1995 supra TT and the 1995 ZR1
I think the above were higher priced and more performant than the F355 for the '95 model year? The Bugatti, F50, and F1 are in a different class altogether, you can't tell me you would not trade the two or three F355s you have for any of these three? .
Higher priced - yes. Better performance - on most of these 6 cars in a straight line at least. McLaren F1 - Price new $970,000 - 240mph top speed - 0to60 in 3.2 seconds Bugatti EB110 - Price New $450,000 - 213mph top speed - 0to60 in 4.5 seconds Ferrari F50 - Price new - $555,000 - 202mph top speed - 0to60 in 3.7 seconds Ferrari 512M - Price new - $220,000 - 196mph top speed - 0to60 in 4.7 seconds Lamborghini Diablo VT - $160,000 - 202mph top speed - 0to60 in 4.2 seconds Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster - $200,000 - 200mph top speed - 0to60 in 4.5 seconds For Comparison Ferrari F355 - $118,000 - 186mph top speed - 0to60 in 4.6 seconds That only tells part of the story obviously without nimbleness being considered... Fun stuff. Robb
Yup, this one too: a 1995 Fiat Coupè 20V Turbo!!! Beautiful and timeless little brother in the Fiat Family to the 355. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I thought that was butt ugly however now she looks beautiful My taste in cars has changed for the better, I think LOL
Didn't the Lotus Esprit have numbers that were pretty close? At least in terms of 0-60? The Esprit was always very close to the top of my Dream Car List.
First try with mine at the dragstrip it ran 0-60 in 4.25. These magazine guys need to try a little harder
Yup that butt is UGLY! I had never seen that car before. Interesting profile, but that rear end....oy.
