Girodisc is pleased to announce some recent additions to our lineup. We are packaging our most popular components into kits that offer savings over purchasing items separately. Stage one kits are the entry level solution to poor brake performance. These kits include performance pads, stainless steel braided brake lines and Motul RBF600 fluid. This is the cheapest, most effective way to improve your braking performance, you can actually feel it immediately after installation! The next kit available for Ferrari owners, our stage 4 kit, involves replacing your heavy inefficient rotors with our lightweight 2-piece units. I think by now you've read our descriptions here enough that I won't repeat myself on the merits of curved vane, 2-piece rotors...

The Girodisc Pad Spreader is a tool designed by us to quickly and easily push all the pistons inside the caliper back to insert new pads without forcing the pistons back by hand or with screwdrivers etc. Specially designed to work on Porsche GT3 and all other fixed calipers, both OEM and aftermarket. Great for track days or for the garage.

Girodisc Replacement Brake Pad Wear Sensors:
Newly released are our Girodisc Brake Pad Wear Sensors. Many Ferrari OE pads were designed to accommodate wear sensors but most aftermarket pads do not include these. Ferrari does not sell these separately but finally there is an answer. Our wear sensors come with a clip that locks into your OE or aftermarket pads and simply plugs into to your stock harness for an easy, painless installation.

    Fluid:

    Castrol SRF:
Castrol SRF Racing Brake Fluid is an ultra high performance product formulated specifically to satisfy the ever increasing stresses placed upon the braking systems used in international motorsport. Castrol SRF is less hygroscopic than conventional brake fluids - it absorbs less water in a given time. Secondly, unlike conventional glycol ether fluids, Castrol SRF reacts chemically with the absorbed water to reduce its adverse effects, thus preventing the fluid's high temperature performance and safety margins from deteriorating as rapidly as they would otherwise do.

    Motul RBF600:
The very high wet boiling point (421F) superior to conventional DOT 5.1 non silicone base fluid (356F min) and DOT 4 (311F min) assures efficient braking even under humid and moist conditions. Indeed, DOT 3, DOT 4, and DOT 5.1 brake fluids have the property to absorb humidity in the air, which reduces their boiling points and increases the risk of boiling the fluid. RBF 600 Super Hi-Temp racing brake fluid was developed for high heat and the extreme pressure demands of professional racing. RBF 600 has a low viscosity blended with unmatched performance in the most extreme conditions for minimal hydroscopic effect and very low compressibility. The RBF 600 will give solid pedal feel, great response, super high heat protection and maximum life. You could save a couple dollars buying ATE or Motul 5.1 but why?

    Lines:

    Girodisc SS Lines:
Besides looking cool, stainless braided brake lines provide some major performance benefits. First and foremost is removing compliance in the system to improve pedal feel and improve the ability to modulate effectively. As the system heats up during heavy use, the rubber hoses swell even more than when simply driving around town. The result is a mushy pedal due to swelling rubber hoses. The braided stainless outer sleeve also provides an extra measure of abrasion resistance and protection from road debris. These are one of those rare parts that don’t cost much but offer an immediate and noticeable improvement in performance.

    Pads:

    Girodisc Magic Pads:
Girodisc "Magic Pads" are the solution to your squeaky, dusty, expensive factory pads. They have less dust than typical factory pads and much less than typical performance pads. Additionally, they have great initial bite, something less expensive pads are lacking. But the real reason people like our pads so much, they are the "silver bullet" to brake noise problems. Magic pads are a semi-metallic composition that is easy on the rotors and the wallet. We recommend always replacing pads as a whole car set when switching compounds. Come with wear sensors pre-installed.

    Ferodo DS2500 Pads:
Ferodo DS2500 Pads are the ultimate street pad. With great initial bite they have an operating temp up to 1000 degrees. They will produce more dust and the occurrence of squeaking is high but there is no other pad that performs on the street as well as these without being a full blown track pad. This pad is for the owner that drives hard during the week and hits the track on the weekend and doesn’t want to worry about having to swap out pads. No wear sensors.

    Porterfield R-4 Pads:
Being able to maintain an average of .50 friction level within a very wide temperature range gives the R-4 pad astounding versatility and makes it very suitable for a wide array of various track conditions. This is a rotor friendly, entry level track pad. Other materials may make more friction, or go to a higher temperature, but these are available for just about anything on the road or track and are reasonably priced. See what you’ve been missing running those street pads! No wear sensors.

    Raybestos ST43 Pads:
Raybestos ST43 Pads are our favorite track pad. Very aggressive pad, yet easy on the rotors. Made of a hard compound they last a very long time and never fatigue. A very reasonably priced pad, the ST43 pad is a track favorite and we highly recommend it. ST-41 also available with the very maximum bite. Not for rookies however, which is why we recommend the 43 more often than not. They are just so easy to control at the edge. No wear sensors.

    Rebuild Kits:

    Girodisc Brembo Caliper Seal Kit:
Girodisc has assembled the parts from Brembo to give you a complete seal kit to replace the worn seals in one of your calipers with new OE Brembo Pieces

Girodisc Brembo Caliper Dust Boot Kit:
Girodisc has assembled the parts from Brembo to give you a complete Dust Boot kit to replace the worn boots in one of your calipers with new OE Brembo Pieces

    Girodisc Brembo Caliper Rebuild Kit:
Girodisc has assembled the parts from Brembo to give you a complete rebuild including Dust Boots and Seals to rebuild one complete caliper with new OE Brembo Pieces

    Rotors:

    Girodisc 2pc Slotted Floating Rotors:
Our Girodisc 2pc Floating rotor is a curved directional vane cast iron rotor with an aluminum center hat. Made of a premium rotor casting the directional curved vane design cools better then a standard pillar vane rotor under high speeds and hard driving, and able to withstand repeated abuse on the street and track. Our aluminum center hat not only saves weight (around 3.5-6lbs lighter per rotor) over the OE counterpart but also has a floating design allowing the rotor and hat to expand separately as they heat up to help prevent cracking and rotor coning. Available both front and rear for most applications.

    Shields & Shims:

    Girodisc Ti Heat Shields:
The problem of brake fluid boiling is simply traced to heat transferring from the rotors and pads directly into the fluid through the caliper pistons. When brake fluid boils, it releases air that is normally part of the molecular structure of the fluid. This air is compressible of course, and the brake pedal goes to the floor instead of moving the caliper pistons. The Girodisc solution to help prevent fluid boiling is to use a thin titanium shim placed between the pad back and the pistons, to keep the braking heat from transferring into the pistons and fluid. These are very effective and have the added benefit of extending the service life of the dust boots and seals in the calipers.

    Girodisc Anti-Noise Pad Shims:
Our Girodisc Anti-Noise Pad Shims are designed to help eliminate the squeak that some of the hotter pads on the market have been known to cause. Easy to install, these are the same pad shims that are pre-installed on our Magic Pads and will help make those aggressive pads more bearable on the street. These can be a great help in providing noise free braking. NOT intended to quiet down race pads driven on the street!

I like your products, I'll bear them in mind for when I need new braking hardware. How do the wear sensors attach to the aftermarket pads?

Thanks Derek. The replacement wear sensors attach to factory style pads in exactly the original way. Little plastic end with spring clip locks into cutout in pad backing plate. Our Magic Pads have the wire embedded into the back edge of the pad material. Since the 360 uses a open circuit looking for ground(earth) it works in the same way. When the pad material is worn away and exposes the first bits of wire strand, they contact the rotor closing the circuit. Light comes on the dash and you change your pads.

    Thanks,

    Martin

    Thanks Martin.

I replaced my pads only recently with EBC Redstuff fast road pads which don't have a wire sensor. Can your sensors be attached to these pads? I don't recall seeing a recess to put a sensor?

The OEM style replacement sensors will not work with pads that do not have the cutout. Our magic pads are drilled in house (there are no aftermarket pads available with cutouts) and we bond the stripped wire in there. You would have to drill your pads and fabricate a wire with bullet connector and do the same. Good luck!

I see that the magic pads and shims (both kinds) have been out for some time now. Anyone have a review of these? In particular, do the shims (when used with others' pads; the magic pads already have shims) soften the feel too much, and thus should be used only as a last resort (to cure noise or keep the fluid from boiling at the track)? I like the current firm pedal feel of my brakes and wouldn't want to compromise that (though I haven't taken them apart to see what's currently in there - I think they're OEM, however).

Also, anyone get the piston spreader? If not, how do you retract the pistons, with a C-clamp or?

What size pin punch tool to use to drive out the retaining pins?

Finally, are the rotors held in with set screws and if so, where to get new ones in case I strip one?

As you might guess, I'm about to do my first brake job on my car. (I've done lots of brake jobs, mostly on BMWs, but this is my first with a multi-piston design.)

I'm no longer a sponsor here but I can probably answer the technical part of your questions without drawing too much attention from Rob...

The pin punch can be anything small really, 1/8th inch or smaller, they come out pretty easily. Heck a framing nail would work. The pistons can be retracted the old fashioned way of using the old brake pad as a lever and prying them back in one at a time, leveraging off the old disc while the caliper is still on the car. Just takes a little time as the other pistons like to pop back out as you are pushing the one in. They all will go back however fairly easily. If you have CCM rotors, do NOT use this method. The chance of cracking the disc is high and they are a small fortune to replace. Buy or borrow the tool for CCM.

The rotor "set screw" is a 12mm bolt IIRC and is easy. Re-use this piece.

The only trick comes at the rear. The parking brake caliper is tough to get off. You need to cut down a 10mm allen wrench to about a 1/2" (I think it's a 10). When you back the bolt out the allen will hit the lower control arm and you can't finish getting it out. But with the shortened allen, it'll just clear. Then, you need a parking brake piston retracting tool. The piston spins in, it doesn't push in. It can be accomplished with a pair of channel locks but it's not easy. I think Harbor Freight sells a PB piston retracting thingy, it looks like a cube and each side fits different styles of PB pistons. It's cheap and makes the job easier. Spin it all the way in, it'll reset itself to the correct position when you use it the first couple of times.

The shims don't affect pedal feel really, or at least I can't tell any difference. Rubberized ones for noise, Titanium ones for the track, as a heat barrier. Both are available from Daniel at Ricambi.

It's not a tough job, and with the right tools is just another brake job.

    Good luck.

    Martin

Thanks. Is it true that the springs can only be had if you buy the OEM pad set? I can't find the springs (and pins) separately sold. I guess they're reusable, but eventually they will lose their springiness.

Springs and pins don't really wear out. Pins can get beat up when guys are racing and hammering them in and out all the time, they never run the spring clips. I've never seen a sloppy spring. They are available, from the Volvo dealer. S60R rear caliper uses a clip and pin the same as 360 IIRC. Approx 25 bucks
