Well I got it done...belts and bearings over my vacation and whooohoooo it started and ran fine. Everything went smooth except the wonderful bearing drop. I also got my carbs sync'd, oil changed, brake pads replaced, hood struts replaced, airbox sandblasted and painted, and a couple other things. I have decided that by the next belt change i'm going to learn to live without air conditioning. If the compressor wasn't in the way doing the belts would be a snap. I'll get pictures of everything cleaned and sprayed next week when I go back down to my garage down south.

Congrats on the completion of your project, now enjoy the results of your hard work and send some pics. Just think how much easier the next belt change will be.

way to go, share some pics and esp. inside tips for newbies if you can...did you do timing or just belt swap? How did you lock the cam gears? any other seals changed? was your cam timing correct?

I took the cam covers off but the timing was right on. I made my own cam locks out of wood to see how they would work for the next belt change and they worked great. I did slip a tooth on the rear bank drive gear when I rotated the engine to check everything out so I had to adjust that back one tooth. As far as recommendations for newbies if you have access to a recycling system for your A/C...use it. I couldn't imagine trying to do everything with the compressor still attached. Then again taking the AC compressor off is a chore; it was very hard to get out. Next time I will probably switch all the studs I can to bolts, it will make the compressor removal much easier.

Just as you and I suspected...

When I did mine, I unbolted the compressor and you lay it to the side, hoses still connected. But you are correct, it is a major PITA, especially the process of reinstalling. You also need to be careful about counting and replacing the same number of shims on the various accessory, pulley, and AC brackets...that can mess up the alignment of each of the accessory belts. Call me!!, hell, come over to the house...I'd love to see the car after all of your work. 933-8408.

Ditto the Congrats, glad to see another one done by an owner.

After working on this latest 308 the last few weeks, I have come to the conclusion that I would have been way far ahead if I had simply removed the engine. I had both exhaust headers to replace, and the front one would have been far easier sitting on the floor. This would have saved so much more time, and I could have cleaned everything sooooo much better. If any of you have a 308 with miles that you need to tackle a first big service on, and especially if its really oily and filthy underneath, you may want to consider this. Its about 6 hours of work or so to remove it, but may well be worth the effort. The front header, alt., and starter can stay on the engine when you yank it.
