Earlier today there was a power outage while my computer was on. I don't have a surge protector (I know, I know). Power came back on and I turned my computer on and everything was fine. Then later on in the day it just froze and I decided to hit the power button to restart it. It just wouldn't start back up. The power button did turn on and the fans and everything came on, except nothing would actually happen. The monitor would just stay off. The power button on the monitor would turn from green to orange. The power button on the tower completely goes off after a few seconds and the monitor just doesn't show anything, the keyboard lights don't even light up. So power is getting to the tower because the fans are on and it SOUNDS like it's working, but it's not. There are no beeps when I turn the computer on. I'm thinking it's the motherboard. I was told it could also be the CPU, but most likely the motherboard. What do you guys think?

I'm thinking something got fried. Try calling dell, if you have a warranty.

I would recommend just taking it to your local Best Buy. I worked at Geek Squad between high school and college and its something we will probably diagnose free of charge. Ask them to try to put another power supply in there and test to see if it works (or you could do that at home if you have another computer) and it really will take 2 minutes to diagnose what is probably wrong with the computer. If it turns on with another power supply, then there is probably something wrong with your power supply, otherwise its probably your motherboard.

If you have a WIndows CD, try to boot off that. If you can then you can look at the hard drive to see if it is still alive.

If it doesn't even beep, it's most likely the motherboard. If it was the CPU or graphics card, you'd hear beeps. But stranger things have happened, get some nerd to take a look at it :)

Fried motherboard most likely. Best to get somebody to look at it to be 100%.

PM the service tag number, I'll be able to tell you if it's under warranty and how many days are left. I'm also a certified warranty Dell tech so I may be able to order you a new part if it's still under warranty.

Wow...I'm having the same problem with my laptop (well sort of). It doesn't seem to fire up at times. It will "power up" with the lights on and all that, but nothing shows up. After a few years of leaving it alone, it's fine. Does this about once a week or so.

also try power it up without any external accessories attached and see if that works. Sometimes defective USB devices can cause grief on early bootup.

Also worth opening up to see if there's anything obviously burnt/fried inside.

good luck, doesn't sound good though.
