I thought I was just clicking the address bar pulldown and this appears in my browser window.

I have no idea what it is. I left the window open, took a screenshot. This isn't any site I've visited recently, I don't think. ????????

wierd. I don't want to click any of that stuff because I'm afeared of viruses and stuff.

Don't worry about getting viruses. If you're using IE on MSN, you've got 'em for sure. ;)

That's a directory listing -- what a web server spits out when there's no default page (usually index.html) in the directory.

From the private network address, it looks like an MSN internal redirect page -- possibly associated with their ad pop-ups or inserted ads ... or their internal "statistics" (aka "phishing").
The item to note is "MSNSnifferServiceTestPage.aspx".

Web pages aren't all one file. Each page has embedded elements from separate files. For example, images are stored as separate files. Embedded elements are referenced by another url, sometimes on a different server from the basic page. Sometimes, the url you enter will redirect you to a whole different "top level" page on a different server. Embedded elements can also be redirected. A classic example was the old "visit counter" which was often located on a different server.

This is sometimes useful for bandwidth purposes. A basic page may redirect to large images stored on a network server with a higher bandwidth connection, making the page load faster.

When you visit a web site, your web browser passes lots of information to the web server: your IP address, your computer and browser type, the previous page visited, etc. (I had a friend who swears by the "galeon" browser, because you can configure some of that passed over information -- his computer tells web servers that he's running a Commodore Pet. ;))

Some web pages will redirect an insert to a "statistics" page that collects your information: either to make the pages work better with the more common browsers, or to justify the high web "designer" fees, or to feed customer information to marketing, or any number of other reasons. This may be associated with an ad insert, or may appear on the display simply as a virtually invisible 1x1 pixel dot.

Like fire and firearms, redirect tools can be used for either beneficial or nefarious purposes. Categorizing the purpose is a matter of interpretation.

When the pages start to redirect to each other, you can get an infinite loop - but most modern browsers have a maximum number of redirects parameter that will limit how many different hops it will take.

You seem to have hit a broken redirect link, and wound up on what looks like a statistics page test directory.
