Okay so my computer got spywared ... err. So I have installed Spybot and sorted that mess out so I almost have control of my PC, but I have this "Security Toolbar 7.1" in my IE browser that I cannot work out how to uninstall. It's like the Google toolbar except Google allow you to remove this ...

Every time I launch IE now it goes to this security site (ie. it keeps updating my home settings), which is obviously where the spyware came from ... lovely companies NOT!

    Any ideas please?
    Pete

Can you delete the downloads in your add/ remove section in the control panel area?
I recall something like this a few years ago.

Also is that security site logged in as your home page? Change it under internet options if so.

I would run spybot or another anti virus program. I ended up buying AVG because the free addition worked so well. It's all I use now. http://free.grisoft.com/

    P.S. IE is the worst.

Thanks Neil, I've tried all those suggestions and this program automatically changes my home page BACK!

Oh well spybot made it liveable, but I would like to regain full control ;) :D. Maybe I should run spybot again.

I'm no computer wizard, that's for sure. Try AVG, it works well.

    Good luck.

Have you tried googling "Security Toolbar 7.1"? There seems to be a lot of pages devoted to it. But I didn't click on any of the links. Just in case they wanna load something! But you got nothing to lose since you are infected already.........

"Security Toolbar 7.1 is a dangerous spyware toolbar and it comes from a very dangerous trojan, called Trojan.Zlob. Once the Security Toolbar 7.1 installed, you start receiving warning messages claming that your system is infected and recommends buying various type of fake & dangerous antispyware application."

I'd install ccleaner and see if that gets it out. If not try "A-Squared free". Both of these programs are free ;)

Okay for others I eventually found the problem (thanks to above advice). Here is what solved it for me:

This removes the toolbar and also the automatic redirection.

Safe mode is accessed on most Windows systems by holding the F8 key down while starting the PC. BTW: My directory was not called Video ActiveX but something similar and this is where the virus comes from ...

    Thanks all.

Spybot has a few other options you need to look into. Go to the "Advanced", it is probably under view. (it has been a while and I'm on a mac now) Once in Advanced, look to find the Tools section, and click on BHOs. You are looking for descriptions here that look familiar to the toolbar. You can right click and remove it here. You also need to look at the homepage section. And set each one to "about:blank" <--- which means, no page loads at all upon startup.

Once that is done. Launch away, and go get yourself Firefox from www.mozilla.com, because Firefox doesn't have the same annoying holes that IE does.

Let me know if you run into any issues.
