My computer has been randomly shutting down. It started yesterday when i put my ipod in and it shutdown, then had to run the scandisk thing that checks for irregularities in the disk then is fine. It has since happened about 5 more times. Mostly when i put my ipod in but also happened when i re-plugged my printer in (i had to unplug it to move it). This hasn;t happened before.

    Anyone have any ideas?

btw, i'm virus scanning it now and there appears to be no virus like this on the symantec site. I've also S&D my computer and add awared it. Nothing.

    Help Appreciated

    Chris

Is the plug all the way in...?

i'm seriously not trying to be sarcastic...

i'm having the same problem, except, i don't have an iPod and i'm not plugging or unplugging my printer... i think it might be a hardware issue like the motherboard or whatever... i don't know a whole lot about this sorta stuff...

I suggest you uninstall everything related to your ipod. Check for spyware, like you say you are. Do not try and and connect the ipod - Then see if you still have the crashes. Let us know.......

Sorry, I know that sucks, but I'm just trying to help. Check the message boards and confirm that people are having trouble with Itunes. Esp. if you have musicmatch on your system. Once you determine the problem I'm sure we can get Itunes to work with your sys.

Good luck & check all resources.......

    Hey Chris,

We've all been there before with one program or another. ITunes loads a lot of files in the background. It will also change a lot of settings. Are you saying you unistalled it? You have to be very specific if you want our suggestions to work.

If you uninstalled it and you are not getting the shutdowns that's a good start. Keep posting here and I will try and help you, but I would also post on an ipod site as they have more experience with this.

    - Eric

ok, re-installed itunes (i just re-installed it, not completley uninstalled it). Fixed that.....then it shut down again

went into some config stuff and changed it so that when there is a system faliure it won't shut down, dunno if that will help or not..

then i looked in system log and all the times that i has done this a program (different ones, trillian, office, itunes, cd ripping program etc) it says they have "faulted". there is tons of other stuff too.

LetsJet, is there any info you specifically want that could help you (and me)?

    Chris,

Read your post and tell me if you understand it. I'm not trying to be rude but I can't understand everything you have done. In computers, the slightest little thing could make the difference....

I'm going to make some assumptions in my answer. First, you said you re-installed ITunes. You never gave me an answer that you uninstalled it. Did you? And when you did, did the system crash or did it solve the problem. If it did solve the problem there are a couple of things to consider.

When you uninstall ITunes I've read that not all the files are removed. So, if you re-install the problem is likely to occur again. You must go to a site that can tell you what files / registery edits and deletes might be required to do a complete uninstall. Also, you need to make sure all programs, including anti-virus, etc. programs are not running when you reinstall. Do not even consider re-installing until you determine this is the problem. It sounds like your so concerned about using ITunes that your rushing this. Give up on ITunes for the moment.

Did you ever have Musicmatch on your system?

You have some kind of a virus, worm or malicious file on your computer that is doing this. If you have an ativirus software, update your virus defenitions and run a virus check. Unplug yourself from the internt while you are running the virus check.

If you do not have a antivirus software you need one now.
