    here's what's going on:
we have a wireless network here at home, there's the main computer the router is hooked up to, the laptop i'm working on right now, and a third pc, with a belkin wireless adapter attached through a usb port on it. that 3rd computer, the pc not connected to the router, gets good internet connection, but it's mainly used to download things with, and whenever we're downloading, the other 2 computers internet gets really slow and spotty, and the pc that downloads the internet kind of fades in and out. any thoughts/suggestions so that the other 2 computers don't slow down and the 3rd pc doesn't get internet intermittently?

    You get your choice:

A)You may not have enough bandwidth from your internet service provider which causes a bottleneck at your router and would result in intermittent service, dropped packets, and in general slow service.

    B) The computer connecting wirelessly is causing a bottleneck because it's an "old" version of USB and data is being transferred too slowly/the USB devices cache isn't big enough. (I don't know too much about USB Network Adaptors unfortunately)

    C) It could also be a dying router/access point(I've had a Belkin, the Belkin experieced spotty service before being put to pasture). Personally I'd go with this without knowing how long you've had it and how long its been causing this inconvenience.

What kind of speeds do you get?
What kind of USB network adaptor is it?
    What are you using for wireless connectivity? (802.11 A, B, G, N?)
How long have you had the Belkin and been experiencing this problem?

If your downloading any large files (torrents etc) you have to expect your internet to be slow, thats the way it is, not much to fix that.

I've noticed that as soon as you start "uploading" data, the internet connection gets extremely slow.

Here is a little setup my IT Guru did for me.
    1. Set up modem close to main telephone line to house.
    2. He brought a handfull of wall plug ins that have two outlets. (One telephone, one internet <Cat 5> )
    3. He used 2 wires for the telephone and the remaining wires for the internet.
    4. Split the wires at the telephone box and modem

Now where ever a telephone jack is there is also and internet connection, just plug computer cable into wall jack and quick internet throughout the house.

    1) tell me how and i'll check when i get home, both on the laptop and the pc
    2) it can't be anything too fancy, if i had to guess, the pc that's causing/having the problem has gotta be 5 years old
    3) i'm not certain, but 802.11 sounds about right
    4) i've had the belkin adapter since we got the computer, our linksys router is about a year old, so i'm fairly certain that's not the problem. i think i diagnosed the other computer's slow connectivity to downloading a while back, but this pc just recently started being so slow while downloading, probably within a month.

all updated and patched up? five years old can be a problem but shouldn't be so long as the software is maintained.

    3) i'm not certain, but 802.11 sounds about right
802.11 is the first part, but need the specific letter part: A, B, G, N?

Downloading what? What is running on the other systems? Are you running torrents? How are you downloading whatever you say you are downloading?
Even if something is a year old or five years old, they can still be bad. Linksys routers... I have replaced more that just go belly up than you can imagine.

yeah, we just replaced our old router with this one, that one went belly up after about a year and a half. the older pc is completely updated, i run windows update weekly, going to the website and downloading all available. if by patching you mean making sure spybot and the virus scanner are up to date, that's done. i will answer the other questions when i get home today. kind of a funny side note, i was checking out this thread on a friend's computer without being logged in, and the first google ad that popped up was for belkin, :)

sorry for the late reply, but my friend suggested i download and install the belkin wireless network monitor, instead of letting windows run it, at least the pc that had the problems is now getting a good strong connection without going in and out, but i've decided that the other computers running slowly is the fact that downloading the stuff is using up all of the bandwidth. thanks everybody!
