Why don't you just run a wire straight from the router to the PC, much faster and won't drop the signal.

is it a wireless card in the desktop? or one of those wireless network usb attachments?

first thoughts: update drivers? anything in the line of sight which might prevent the signal from reaching the pc?

wired would be best, if you can do it. it will be faster and far more reliable.

clearly your router is getting over-excited at the pictures on your laptop screen. try turning the wireless router 90 degrees and try again.

there's some logic to this - the RF signals from wireless routers radiate in different patterns depending on the antenna's used, the power, and the material interfering between you and it. steel and water is tough for signals to penetrate (you're mostly water - despite the silicone ingestion over the years). there's a possibly your router will give off a stronger signal off a different side.

bigger antennas help (laptop and router - although likely stuck on the laptop side), as do dual antenna's on the router (it's complicated). Can also be interference from 2.4Ghz cordless phones, microwave ovens, neighbors wireless routers (try changing the channel from the default of 6 to 1 or 11 on the router), or that beer bottles in the way (back to the water thing again).

As dude says, if you don't want to become an RF engineer - fall back to the wired option.

fyi: pretty well all consumer wireless routers seem to be limited to 30mw power output, where all the commercial stuff is at 100mw. it makes a big difference, and I've got enough kids already so the RF radiation isn't a concern.
