I am having a problem trying to help a friend get on the internet for the first time. He is using a pentium III Dell that is running windows 98 it has more then enough power to surf the internet. But, I can't seem to get the comcast hi-speed to work right. It keeps saying no adapter is connected when in fact I installed the ethernet board from comcast and the drivers and the computer recognizes it. What do I do now? I called comcast and for the first time ever they were useless. Normally they are pretty good.

Do you have a router or does the cable modem go directly to the network card in the PC?

If you have a router, open your browser and see if 192.168.0.1 is recognized. This is a typical IP address for the router and should give you additional options to check. Variations might be 192.168.2.1 adn 192.168.1.1.

If you don't have a router, was there software with the cable modem that allows you to run diagnostics?

Also, what network component do you have available in Start-Settings-Control Panel-Network? At a minimum, you must have TCP/IP component operational. You can ADD this from Network dialog bix, if needed.

No guarantee that the above will work...just ideas.

Comcast gives you a 3 steps to follow then you insert the cd to install the software for the modem. These steps were all done after I installed the ethernet card and the driver for it. The three steps are cable from cable jack to back of modem, plug modem in, and connect ethernet cable to back of modem and back of cpu. Then the disc takes over from there but it won't let you install the software if the three steps were completed correctly. The comcast software doesn't recognize that there is an ethernet card there yet the computer does.

ok seems that you did everything right, now my question is do why do you need the comcast cd? what is on the cd? you can set up the internet without the cd, unless the cd has something like aol software that your friend might want to use.

you can do the ipconfig to check if you are actually getting an ip address. If you get something with 168.xxx.xxx.xxx then you are not connected to comcast yet. You may want to check the network setting under control panel.

If you do get an ip that starts with 24.xxx.xxx.xxx (seems that the ip ranges from comcast go from 24.0.0.0 - 24.23.255.255) then you are already connected to comcast.

You need the comcast CD to install something? I don't know it just says to put that in next. I have someone coming out from comcast on Monday to help out. Hopefully it is something easy as this guy is in his 60's and seems to have lost interest in the internet already. Thanks for your help and I'll check out the ip address thing.

I had a bunch of problems with Comcast when I got a cable modem.

Short story is that BOTH times they had problems updating THEIR server with the MAC address of my cable modems. Took hours to resolve.
