Despite using computers since '81 I have never bothered to figure out how the modern new-fangled stuff works.

By the time I submit a reply to a thread someone has already replied, or the dog has died, or whatever and I lose my track ... So

    1. I have in "My Pictures" folder about 1000 quite interesting photos each one between 500kb and 2.4mb
Question - how do I shrink photos down to 80 or so kb postable size without it taking forever to do each one??

    2. I notice that Cyril's photos seem to be hard copy photographs, he has photo'ed with a digital camera. Is it possible to get a "scanner" that I can convert my hard copy photos (1000 or so) and slides (about another 500)onto the computer ??

3.. Can I put "quotes" from different people into the one "reply"?? I would like to catch up to Moretti, but not become a" post whore" if possible

My computer was built in 2002, runs XP home and I have 2 hard disks in a RAID setup (whatever that is). I have a CD reader and a DVD reader/writer. It works fine for doing my share-trading from home here in Regional Oz, with ISDN and 128Kb transfer rate the best I will ever get. I really love it when my son emails me 10mb of photos from his lightning internet in Canada - NOT

BTW I have a copy of DOS 1.1 in its hard folder - worth anything on ebay ??

    Oh yeah - LOL LOL

    Phil,

I will help out on the easy one first :

as you have XP (eXploding 'Puter) it comes with a photo reducing piece of software called Microsoft Photo Editor by default.

When you click on the photo and it is opened up there is an icon on the lower toolbar second from the right that is used to change the dimensions , amongst other things, of the image.

When you click on this icon it will load the image into the editor and then you will see on the top toolbar an "Image" pulldown section with an option of "Resize" , you will find by reducing the width or height from say 6.0" to 1.0" it will go down from 2-3mb to about 50-100kb and this will allow posting on Fchat.

I'll send you a detailed list for the rest of the stuff but I wanna see some of the great photos you must have so try it and see how you go.

    :D :D

also forgot to mention a very important part of the shrinking process , when you have selected the width reduction from say 6 to 1 and then say OK you will see the picture shrink on the screen. This is fine but at this point in order to keep the original photo in the full resolution you currently have do a "Save as.." and rename the file to something like "dino_small" and this will have then reduced the original file for posting under this new name and the original file will be left unmolested whan you close the editor

    Hope this helps

    1. I use Adobe Photoshop for resizing, and you can do batch resizing (i.e. it will resize an entire folder of pics automatically).

    2. Yes, you can buy a scanner for this.

    3. This is the way I do it.....

    1. Qoute the first person you want to reply too.
    2. Once you have typed that, select the text and copy it (Ctrl-A and Ctrl-C)
    3. Click "Back" in your browser (Internet Explorer), then qoute the next person you need to reply too.
    4. Type your reply, then paste (Ctrl-V) the previous qoute above this one.......
    5. Repeat the process if needed.

    Thanks to Dingo and JM

I now have Adobe Photoshop CS and have started. I notice that after I shrink a photo to 200kb on Photoshop, when I upload to FChat it becomes a 90kb file - Does this make sense?.

Also in "My Pictures", my folders(about 15) of photos, which I like in thumbnails, used to have the name of the folder underneath, appears to have stopped displaying the folder name underneath it I started playing.

When I run the cursor over the folder, the name is still there. Any clues on how to get the "name" back underneath the folder??

The folders in "My Documents" have still got the name underneath.

sorry Phil, this looks like one of those "oh I've seen that before " thing , or " I need to be sitting in front of the thing"

Dingo probably has run across this, I'm too poor to afford fancy sw packages

There is a size limit for pictures of 195.3 KB, and it must be 640x640 or less. I resize mine to 640x480 and they are usually around 80Kb.

Not sure about that one.....

I never said I paid for Photoshop. ;)
