I was screwing around with my wireless network adapter(built in) on my Toshiba laptop because I Iwas having trouble connecting to a wireless network. I had the bright idea of rolling the driver back to a previous driver. Did that, it didn't work. Luckily I can still ue the ethernet adapter and plug the wires directly into my computer from the modem, but its annoying because its in my roommates room.

Next I tried going back to the driver I had been using(and had always used). The computer automatically finds the driver and proceeds to install it. Yet right when it looks like the install is complete a window pops up saying that the computer is unable to install the adapter at this time, "access denied"

So I have tried changing users, loggin in as admin, going into safe mode, getting the proper driver from online, yet I still get that stupid "access denied" window. What in the world could it be?

I called Toshiba and their tech support was garbage. All they wanted me to try was 'system restore', but that didn't work because it had never been enabled on my comp before.

Any ideas or suggestions before I haul this badboy to some computer shop?

I might just get a USB network adapter, but I would rather try a fix if it is possible.

    Thanks all...

Try deleting the device from the device manager, then reboot. Then try to put the driver in.

Tried that, it says that I can't delete the device because it is used in the boot process. :(

You have to disable the wireless adapter first - then you can go into the device manager - delete the old, reboot then load the driver you know works...

It also could be the physicall wireless adapter itself - it is not unheard of that you might have one go on the fritz...

I would either go USB or just get a PCMCIA card - I can send you a free one if you want to - just PM me and I will give you one - I think I have 10 or so in my pile of extras lying around here somewhere :)

    Hope that helps...

    Used in the boot process?

What other network stuff do you have on your computer?

I think the easiest way to fix this would be going through some msconfig stuff and unchecking a lot of stuff. This way you could also speed up your boot process at the same time.

I am able to disable it, and I have, but when I go to uninstall it I still get the same 'necessary to boot' message.

Indeed, but possibly not since I was the one who initiated the rolling back of drivers.

Wow, thanks for the offer! I would take you up on it, but I use the internet for currency trading, so if I don't get this resolved by tomorrow I will have to buy a new card ASAP or risk not having an income, lol

I have a built in ethernet card as well.

As for msconfig, I could not find anywhere that mentioned the network adapters.

I was just thinking - why don't you do a system restore to when the new driver was not there - go into start, system restore - you can actually select a check point from before it installed the new driver and go from there...

Well, I am just gonna go buy a new card right now for $50. Heck, its cheaper and quicker than taking the comp to some guru for $40/hour :)
