My CPU died on my computer this weekend, so I bought a new motherboard & CPU.

Windows didn't want to work with the new motherboard, so I re-formatted the hard drive & reinstalled Windows XP Home.

    2 problems I am having :

    1) Upon start up, it stops & asks me which version of Windows I want to use. Listed twice is Windows HP Home Edition. Kind of annoying.

    2) Internet explorer works fine, but when I try to launch programs that access the internet (Poker, Windows Registration/Activation, etc), they all don't open with the error that they can't find the server.

So my IE browses fine, but programs can't access the internet? WTF

I am not using a router and under my network connectin properties, the firewall is not set (that option is not checked).

    Can anyone offer some help?

    Thanks

It looks like XP is trying to find the old location of the update servers.

    Try this:

    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

    For the other problem, go:

Right click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings. You can change Time to display list of operating system to 1 second, or you can edit out the duplicate entry by pushing the edit button.

Edit out the one that isn't listed in the default field.

    Thanks!

I'm at work now, but I'll try it when I get home in an hour or so & report back. :)
