So I returned from my amazing trip to find that my computer will not turn on. I think it's dead but I would like to retrieve what I can from the hard drive. Does anyone have a recommendation for someone who comes to the house and does computer repair? I would appreciate any info/companies/names that might be helpful.
    Thanks!
    Nicole

On my way out- but from what I can tell (and in no way am I an expert), Nicole's motherboard might've gone. The computer (a Dell desktop) is about 4-5 years old, she leaves it on all the time, and as of the last couple of years, it's really slowed down. I had her check all the cables and connections to make sure it wasn't a simple disconnected plug.. Whoever helps her will/might have to be able to recover files from the hard drive (data recovery)as the actual computer might be shot.

If you want to try & trouble shoot it yourself for either cost reasons or speed:

I've got decades in the PC hardware business (Owned my own shop & custom build PCs)

    No power, huh?
    1) Is the machine plugged in? check it. please
    2) Remove any UPS or power strip between the computer and the wall. UPS batteries go bad and Power strip breakers trip and MOSFETS go bad. remove the potential issue. Still won't power up?
    3) Is there power at the wall recepticle...plug another appliance in (lamp) and turn it on
    4) Does the monitor turn on?
    5) Does the PC power light come on when you press the button?
yes : might be a power supply problem, but probably more serious so unplug it and take it to a shop before you damage the hard drive.
no: the power supply went bad. especially if you don't hear any fans or drives spinning up. Is it a brand PC like HP? you'll need some custom parts. stop here.
If it's a generic PC: If your comfortable opening the PC, you can buy a new supply at any computer store (CompUSA) with like 400watts for $30-$70 dollars for a generic. Pop open the PC making sure it's unplugged, you are taking proper grounding precautions, unplug the power to the drive, swap supplies, power-on test *without* the drive connected and see if the machine starts to boot (actually, the Power-on Self Test or POST will be all that happens without the drive connected). If it POSTS, then power down, reconnect the drive, power back up & you should be good-to-go. If not, you've other more serious damage.

Feel free to PM me if you want to try this route. It is daunting for most folks who don't know the inside of their PC.

    Clyde,
So when I press the power button on the tower, the light comes on and I hear something happening in the tower. The monitor power also comes on but thats where it stops. Nothing comes on the screen and the tower stops making noise, it wont start up.... I dont think I can handle taking it apart but thanks for your help!

So this tells me either the power supply isn't putting out enough voltage or incorrect voltage (a voltmeter would be needed to check further) or the motherboard is RIP. I assume you plugged directly into the wall. A UPS could still be faulty, not be putting out 110V and cause the powersupply to output wierd voltages.

Oh, I also assume you haven't added any components to the PC lately like a new video card or more memory. external devices generally don't count like a USB printer.

Sounds like it's time to drop it off at a local shop. Not CompUSA as I hear they are shutting down 100 of their stores.

As Clyde said - It's either power supply - one of its circuits is shot or motherboard is fried. Anyway - after 4-5 years of using same computer you might want to make yourself a gift by getting new toy :)

I actually have a laptop I bought about 2 years ago when my desktop crashed (the first time), that I use for work. Kenny was able to fix my desktop that time so I was still using it at home for music, pictures, etc. If it is dead, I need all the data off of it and then I will transfer everything to my laptop.

Man, I wish I was a good looking female... I posted the same issue with my laptop a few months back and not one F-chatter came to my house to help me fix it. From now on, I think I will PM Nicole with my computer issues, have her post it and wait for the F-chatters to come a running....

Thanks for the offer, I am good now. I just love how the guys jumped all over this. If i wasn't a married, bald chubby guy, i'd probably have picked the computer up from her apartment and paid to have it fixed... Side note here, my hardrive died, first guy i took it to said it was a mechanical issue and if i wanted the data, i needed to send it out to be taken apart-estimates were like $2k. brought it to the little computer store in bernardsville and the guy removed it from the laptop, turned it on and off a few times, got it going and 23 hours later (took that long to get the data off it) I had everything.

usually those hard drive places are a rip. I hate companies like the geek squad and such who prey on people who dont know much about computers to make money. Its only good for very serious hard drive issues (once had a very important HD partly de-magnetized). They litterally took off each platter and got the data off. They really do work, but it depends on how much the data is worth to you.
