Guys, I have made a school boy error and forgotten the orientation of the con rods on my engine i.e. to which side of the block should the numbers stamped on them face and does it matter? I know its basic and silly but I could really do with knowing please!

Again- funny you should ask!! if you look at the Angelo wallace book page # 23 you will see that the #s on the con rod and the big end should face the outside of the engine block. In the book they (pg 40 & 41) they further describe it. What can be confusing is that in the illustration on page 41 they show that the side of the piston where the exhaust valve side is must also be to the side that the #s are stamped on the connecting rod and they must all (exhaust valve side of piston, #s on con rod) be toward the outside of the engine side (so the exhaust part). I found it somewhat confusing that in the illustration on pg 41 the exhaust valve indentation was larger than the intake valve indentation. In fact the exhaust valves are smaller diameter (36mm vs 42mm) . It could be the angle of the valve - iI don't know - however I checked it a few times just to be sure. I fitted new pistons but evidently the old ones also had the cylinder # stamped in them too. I will be putting the rest of my psitons in tomorrow so we are doing the same thing. Good luck with yours!!

I recall the non-intuitive valve pockets in the Dino pistons when I was going through this wonderful little motor. If memory serves correctly (and it was about 10 years ago), I think the valve timing puts the smaller exhaust valve closer to the piston at TDC on the Ex stroke as opposed to the In valve chasing the piston.

Check this out and see if it makes any sense.

The con rod #s are to the outside of the block. Beware, on these engines the large valve cut out is for exhaust clearance, I repeat, exhaust clearance. this gives max compression from the piston, do not have the timer to explain here, but believe, it's true. Kind of counter intuitive.
