The Testarossa I'm buying has a tiny scratch on the hood. Otherwise it is perfect. The dealer is willing to having the whole hood repainted. My question is would it be a negative to have a perfect car but repainted hood, or should I leave the scratch and the original paint? Also, the car has a silver shift knob from a 512TR, which I like, but should I go back to original?

I'd say have the hood repainted -- a good job with a proper match won't hurt your resale or concours.

The knob will be worth a portion of a point -- change it out for concours, then put the one you like back on... it's a 60-second swap.

If the color match is good, nobody will even know if the hood as been repainted

If your car has them, remove the tire valvestem caps with the prancing horse logo and replace them, for the concours, with plain black rubber caps. Remember...the criteria in most formal concours is comparing the car today with how it left the factory. Any "aftermarket" goodies are going to hurt with point(s) reductions on your judging score.

Actually, if you have metal valve stems, plain metal caps are appropriate.

For FCA concours criteria, see www.fca-se.org/conc_10.htm

Couldn't you just "spot paint" the scratched area?

Either is going to be OK... and remember that on the older cars more so than the newer ones, Ferrari mechanics often grabbed what was available and there are slight changes from car to car. I was told by a concours judge that "showroom" 308s and 328s had metal caps. The ones that came with my 1-owner car when I bought it were indeed plain polished metal, no dome (first picture). I expect the domed ones (2nd pic) would be ok too.

About valve stem caps, I had a discussion with the judges when my 328 was at Cavallino. I also understand the original ones could be metal and were immediately replaced because the could be difficult to get off. A friend bought a 300 miles 328 GTB and he has the same caps I do and in a car that has always been in storage there is no reason why they would have ever been changed. So metal is ok, but to avoid arguments I put on plastic ones for the show. When I judge, I dont deduct for caps unless they are the prancing horse or other clearly wrong caps.
