It's nice to see a new Champion. He fully deserves it. He has been rock steady all year long, and fast as heck. He has made Fisi look second rate.

What amazes me about Alonso is how much he has matured. He is so cool and collected on track, nothing rattles him. He is blindingly quick when he needs to be, and he know when to dial it down. When he speaks to the press, he sounds like someone who has been in F1 for 15 years. Well done.

I certainly look forward to the great battles I anticipate continuing amongst Alonso, Kimi, Montoya, and hopefully Schumi. I also think Rubens will surprise everyone next year in the BAR. It's looking like we''ll see some very exciting racing for years to come.

He got the most points in a season so he is the WC, no doubt about that.
He has been very reliable and sensible but a lot have to be said about his team reliability otherwise he would not have been in this position.
But what about Kimi, he could have been WC also only if his 'team' and 'team mate' were more reliable!

Agree. While I was hoping for Kimi ... Alonso did the business as 'To finish first, first you must finish'.

I hope Alonso continues to win for the next few years. It's nice to have a WC with a little class after suffering all these years with MS.

I'm glad Alonso won. I have always liked him and I think he is a classy guy. Kimi is a great guy in the car, but seems an irritating geek out of it. I can't cheer for the McLaren team anyway as I enjoy seeing Ron Dennis in pain!

    Well done Fernando!

Let's hope for some Ferrari 1-2's next year. :)

Out of curiousity, if Kimi won the last 2 races then it would have put him in a position of winning more races than Alonso this season. Has there been season(s) that eventual WC won less races than his competitors?

Yup, 1958. I'm not an expert on F1 history but I believe Mike Hawthorn only won 1 race that year. A lot of other point finishes made him WC.

Good for him. I didn't get any thrill out of it, but it is still a great accomplishment-- youngest ever, and first from Spain.

Keke Rosberg won the 1982 World Championship for Williams scoring only a single victory in the season.

That goes to show you don't have to win races or be the quickest to become WC!

Wrong, you have to be consistently the quickest ... which is pretty damn hard. Anybody can have a single good race, even RB ;) ... but to be up the sharp end every race is why Alonso/Renault deserved to become the WC

Also the fact that Rosberg won his WC with only 1 win does not undermind him as a very quick driver at all, just the opposite ... he had competitive opposition that year and thus had to work for it ... unlike many of MS's extremely easy WC years.

Yes and no. He was the last guy with an intact body at the end of the year in the 2nd best car. He won the title by being lucky, but I agree that being consistently quick and not bringing "bad luck" onto yourself is an important part to the puzzle. Something Alonso was able to put together much better than Kimi.

But that's about where the similarities end. Alonso didn't win the title by "just" being consistent. He won six races! Hello!

If you won only 1 race then you could not be classified as 'consistent quickest'! As there would have been 10 others quicker than you in 10+ races!
You must be damn lucky winning WC with only 1 race win!

Wasn't that from the era when you dropped your 2 worst finishes, or did that come later? Do I even have that right? THinking about that now, hair brained FIA rules are nothing new.

Depends on how you look at it. If you're 2nd in every race, and each one has a different winner, then you've honestly been the quickest over the season. However, if 3 different drivers win all the races but have mechanical retirements robbing them in the other races, then maybe you're NOT quickest. You're the luckiest.

???? ... you only used to get points by finishing in the top 6 positions EACH race thus to win the WC you have to have the most points, thus Keke finished MORE consistently in the top 6.

Thus he deserver to win as he was consistently the fastest when the season finished.

I'm very confused how we cannot see this?. You do not have to win each race to be the most consistently fastest ... after all the (say 10 other races could have been won by 10 other drivers).

There is no such thing as luck in motorsport. If your car fails then you (or your team) did not prepare it right.

I suppose the only time I would concede that luck does have anything to do with it is when some bone head other driver looses it into your car ... but then you should have out qualified him and blown him away in the race anyway. Always safer to lead from the front ;) :D

Yeah! The only luck in racing is BAD luck. Like they say, those who work and prepare the hardest always seem to find the luck!
