Congratulations are in order for McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen who has been crowned international racing driver of the year by Britain’s Autosport magazine despite being beaten to the Formula One title by Renault’s Fernando Alonso.

Also at Grosvenor hotel, Bernie Ecclestone accepted a lifetime award, Kimi's MP4-20 McLaren won best car, Pat Symonds (Renault) took home a gong, and Jordan's Tiago Monteiro was named rookie of the year.

2006 promises to be a very interesting year.

He sure deserved it. Wasn't Fred Alonso the man of the year?

That's a lame consolation prize, imo.

As much as I like the timeliness and normally good reporting of my Swiss newspaper, I so hate their chauvinistic bias towards Kimi. They even elected him now F1 driver of the year. Why? Well for one because he drives a German engine, second he was a Sauber driver and third he lives in Switzerland. So totally lame.

I like Kimi and have the highest respect for him, but he lost the title this year fair and square to Alonso. No ifs and buts. If we'd start counting equipment failure as badges of honors and unfair losses we could basically toss the entire F1 history into the fire. All of it.

Kimi is fantastic and will win the title one day and it will be deserved. But 2005 was Alonso's year. The fact that we didn't see more aggressive driving from Alonso is misunderstood by many journalists as him being not capable of doing so. Wrong. He could and he can if he has to. We saw that when he did an "impossible" pass on Schumi in Suzuka (something Fisico can only dream of), but he drove in 2005 just as fast as was required to assure the title. He reminds me a lot of Lauda (the computer) and Prost (the professor, who basically learned his ropes from Lauda). That might not be too exciting for fans, but it makes him a smart driver. I believed him when he said after the season he wished he would have been allowed to pour it on more. I'm sure he and his car could have done it, but it wasn't the wise thing to do. And the journalists (who are supposed to be paid professional experts) calling him a scavenger of points for that is so stupid and not seeing the bigger picture (Renault not having won the title ever for decades, being pressured by their employees, unions, shareholders and goverment to show results in an economically unfriendly period).

PS: What is ultimately pathetic is the change in the Swiss newspaper's attitude: After Kimi left Sauber to go to McLaren he was the bad guy for about a year. Then they started sucking up to him. Disgraceful.

Andreas, that is so well thought and put. I agree with you 100%, Alonso was and is the driver of the Year. Kimi while an outstanding talent did not do what Alonso did, whether by Mechanical Fault or not.

He may have come in second, but he was undoubtedly the fastest. In the car and at the pub.

He did his job well, the car did not.
