I'm in the process of considering investing in a '83 or '84 512BBi. I'd appreciate any info or sources(pref. online) where I can learn what I need to know before buying one of these models. Thanks, Trouble.

Golly, lots of them buggers are trading hands lately. Is it my imagination, or is something going on? Martin? Sean?

It does seem that way JRR. Funny, I see you are a fan of JRTs. We share our domocile w/ a JRT named Trouble. I really like the looks of the 512 BBi and it is an affordable purchase upfront. My concern is what is it gonna cost to drive and maintain. Appreciate any help. Trouble

Get that "investing" thought out of the process, and you will have a much more enjoyable ownership with that car... ;)

I owned a carb Boxer that I imported in 85 [can you say "EPA exemption"]. Had the car for 15 years. Not much went wrong once I got the carb jetting straight. Major service is the standard $5k+/-. Tires/wheels for BBis are that strange TRX mix. A/C works in the winter and heat is great in the summer. I have driven both carb and injected "back to back". The carb has more low end grunt than the injected. However the injected don't foul plugs in traffic like the carb. Also clutch is lighter in the injected as they changed the geometry of the mechanism. By the way...hope your 6' tall or less.

Luckily, yes I am 6' .5" . Hope I can fit in reasonably comfortably. Appreciate the numbers on the repair costs and drivability. Also, I misspoke. I want a car to drive not a garage queen. I shouln't have used "invest". I am a realist in regards to cars. Why buy 'em if you ain't gonna drive 'em. Trouble.

The issue with boxers is maintanance, even the way the ac can work fine as long as youre not stuck in heavy trafic after a long run. These cars need to breathe. On a twenty year old car nearly everything will have needed to be gone through, and maybe a previous owner did this. Assuming a car kept in a plastic bubble all belts and hoses including hoses to heater core. Brakes brake lines shocks etc. Basicaly everything perishable.

Assuming the work done its just regular maitanance, oil etc. I also do a brake bleed, coolant and gearbox fluid change every two years. Basicaly once the work is done figure 1-2k each year not incl tires and 10k+ every 5-6years for a major.

The thing is to get a car thats right in the first place or get a sound car and have the work done for 15-20k.

i have a BBI and its graet for all around driving. There are huge differeces in powewr output depending on how well the banks are balanced and mixture etc. BBI also seems to pass emissions altuogh an older carbed car is potentialy exempt.

Lastly ran the car down a straight next to a daytona performance in a straght line from 40 to 140 was near identical.

How does the interior compare space wise to the TR?
    Especially regarding headroom?
Im assuming the Boxers are somewhat easier to work on the engine due the clamshell back. How true if at all is this?
    Thanks, Dave

Have no idea on interior compared to testarossa. Testarossa is a softer car.
Maitainance seems to be the same or more for testarossa. An serious work on Boxer and engine comes out after removing clamshell, I think testarossa engine is on a cradle that drops out the bottom.

Testarossa a little bit more expensive to maintain and worth less, although it is more "civilised'. Boxer worth more and more raw. Boxer designwise has harmony of shape, curvs like a beautiful women. Testarossa is an 80's parody might look good way in the future like 50's tailfins have a kitch appeal today.

I think a 512tr has seriously more performance than either for things like the track, on the road theyre all really fast.
