Most pre-1991 were God awful 3 speeds. 3 gears in a car that goes well over 100! The cars to get IMHO, are converted manuals.

Don't get me wrong, I like the cars. Those 6.0L cars are beasts!

    I live in Duluth, MN.

During the summer I take any of my convrts to the golf course and leave the top down all day long...never a problem. Granted the sun is less punishing here than in other parts of the country and I don't leather so take that for what it's worth.

I get carpet fade, but that is easy enough to remedy w/ carpet dye usually at the begining of the season.

Biggest issue is adverse weater. At one point I did own an 88 Mustang GT convrt and it did not leak, but all my old corvettes are pretty bad if you get caught out. At a couple of different points I was several hours from home, got caught out and had to put on my golf rain suit for the remainder of the drive.

The 88 GT did not leak and I assume that most anything else that age or newer won't either.

If your wife or GF is HM, the wind action can be a problem =)

Mines not and I have less hair everyday, so overall it's not a problem and IMO, convrts are a great way to really experience "motoring"

    Good luck.

GREAT! Get and enjoy your favorite convertible, drive at as much as you can, weather will determine that. :)

I used to have Motorcycles, big road bikes, that I truly loved to ride. Rode to Alaska, just because it was something I wanted to do. I used the bikes as my convertibles, and got my fresh air, like that. In my cars, I always got a sunroof, when possible, to enjoy the nice sunny winter days, more often than I expected. I didn't have a car that I enjoyed more, with a sunroof, than without, even in Michigan's, long and cold winter's, and too short summers. May be another way for you to go, if a convertible won't work, in a situation.

    Ciao...Paolo

Viper SRT-10 or an RT-10 is very nice especially the later RT-10's with the removeable roof.

The C5 vette with the removable roof top is also a great choice.

I would HIGHLY recommend an XK8 over an XJS. They are just much better cars.

They may be, but I drove one for a day and it just feel right to me. Don't know how to explain it.

I think I have to ask the Mrs. how much she'd mind having her hair blasted around. That might settle it. ;)

Or maybe I should think about it for another summer and enjoy the Motorcycle instead. At least there,
    you're wearing helmets.

Still....it's hard to pass that one up. :(

E46 M3 convertible? I think the rear window is glass and not plastic. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I am considering a convert for the wife.
996 or Lexus SC430. She didnt go for the GT2 plan. Rats.
Both are "hard top" convertibles. The 911 actually looks pretty good and are cheaper than a real coupe.
One tip; if you buy a cloth top, leave it unlocked. If da bad guy wants what you got, he's going to get it anyhow. Save the cost of a cut top.

One more tip. If you are a guy dont get a SC430. Every time I see a guy in one my first thought is " I wonder if his shoes match his purse ". This is the chick car personified.

996 is NOT a hard top convertible.....

And the SC430 isn't as much of a chick car as a Miata or non-M BMW convertible.

Ever consider a Mercedes retractable hardtop? To me they look great.

    A good compromise?

    Wow...good memory!

Yes, I got married (1st time) in October. Perfect match.

I wanted to surprise her, but broke down and asked if she would mind
"having her head blown off" by the wind. She was OK with it.

Still, with summers short here, you can set up all your nice plans for that sweet ride
Sunday night only to see bad weather ruin your plans. That's the problem with having
a 'fair weather' toy. I hate missing out on the one I saw, but I am hessitant to pull
    the trigger.

It is also a complication that my mechanic is closing down so I will have to trust
other "non-Jag specialist" mechanics who are OK, but I don't know how good they are
on Jags. So instead of becoming less invested in Jags I would be more invested. That,
plus the extra new fussing has me thinking twice....nay...thrice about it. ;)

get one with an automatic top for sure, I don't the weather in your parts but in houston it can be sunny and still downpour in a second. I won't ever forget one day last summer I was in my SL55 and one of these sudden downpours came on and there was a murcielago roadster which cost probably 3 or 4 times my car and the guy was getting rained all over sitting in traffic and I snapped up my top in 20 seconds. I got a great kick out of it.
