    Could anyone please enlighten me that why the (middle shifter) console is sometimes in wood, while at other times it is in leather? Is there a cut off year after which all were leather, or was it an option for car buyers?

    Yes. Series 1 cars are wood, series 2 are not. Among many other changes. Search here there are a few threads talking about the differences.

    When in wood(serie 1) the heater control are chrome and kind of oval and placed 2 on each side of shifter S2 are black plastic and all four on the left. 3 upper gauges compare to four.

    Then the controls are also reversed on an S2 car if it is a 5-speed
